Gifted

#1 Post by stuartboy » Sun Jun 04, 2017 10:52 pm

Rather unoriginal. Pretty much a cross between Little Man Tate and Hidden Figures. It even had Octavia Spencer from that in it too. Her bulging eyes making her look even more frog like than before. A far from unpleasant film but nothing outstanding. Pretty much a Channel 5 early afternoon film.

5/10

I agree with the above review. Very moving at times. Very pleasant movie but all the clichés have been rolled out.
Not really Worth the price of a cinema ticket.

I liked it much more than the previous 2 reviewers, but don't disagree with their reasons. It's not particularly original, but I ended up completely swept up in the story and characters.

Octavia Spencer was excellent as always and it was great to see Chris Evans in a smaller, non superhero film. He was understated, but still oozed movie star charisma and his relationship with Mary was utterly believable. Mckenna Grace was fantastic as Mary, carrying the film and stealing scenes, remarkable for someone so young - though it appears she is a relative veteran after looking at all her IMDB credits.

Some of that relationship comes across in this behind the scenes featurette - it does mention some plot points, but there are no major spoilers

So overall the charm of the film and the performances helped me overlook any of the cliches, I found it both funny and emotional 8/10

Something of a cross between Eastenders and Countdown. 4 disparate performances as a stoic Chris Evans cares for the uneven Mckenna Grace with the help of magical Octavia Spencer while a flighty Lindsay Duncan hatches a dastardly plot.

It was frustrating because the unconventional parenting and maths scenes added up for me but they were surrounded by a movie that required the same poor decisions that happen in every custody scene just so the characters could get stuck in a solveable jam.

A trifle predictable but the added sprinkles were a nice addition, depending on your taste.

well.. some interesting reviews from above but of course that is the nature of our freedom.. diversity and differences. But saying that it is probably not an original idea or script. i enjoyed it.. especially the performance of the little girl and the formidable Lindsey Duncan. Likewise it was great to see Chris Evans in a non superhero role... i felt he did it justice and as time went.. powerful issues emergenced... in the courts. i mentioned Ruth Lawrence to my guests ( so many years ago)

Predictable but a good Sunday morning movie. The little girl was cute and played the part well. Lots of humour in it. 7/10

Similar sentiments to the other reviews. Overall I have to say I did enjoy it, and it was quick enough and short enough to retain my interest throughout. It was predictable, but was always going to be. Some of the dialogue was clever, and the maths angle was a nice diversion. Certainly more of a lazy Sunday afternoon film.

I enjoyed this. Yes Sunday afternoon drama in type and style and substance but well told and well acted, and Chris Evanswas believable and agree nice to see him in a really different role from his norm.

Like many of the other reviewers I found the plot predictable but generally enjoyed the film. The young actress who played Mary was enchanting. Chris Evans, Lindsay Duncan and Octavia Spencer also put in sterling performances, Gifted won't win any awards but nonetheless it was a pleasant watch. 6/10
