Really enjoyed this. Nice change of pace from recent films watched. Victorian London was as dark and gloomy as you would expect but everything lit up whenever scenes were in the theatre. Lots of twists and turns and a strong cast. 8/10

Like a Victorian version of Inspector Morse, this is largely slow chatty sequences. Why all the chat for? Why bother? Well it helps to set the 19th gaslit scene well with its lively banter and eclectic characters. It does all get a bit much about halfway through and it makes it feel a longer film than it is, since very little seems to happen to tell the truth.

If you want an atmospheric Victorian thriller which generates the feel of reading a gothic 19th century book, try it.

PS there is no actual "golem" or anything supernatural in it. Its not that kind of movie. Hammer house without the Hammer. Or the ham.

I love Bill Nighy so seeing his name on the poster I went for the tickets without reading more about the movie. Not completely bad but the story is too theatrical and far too bloody for me...
my own fault for not reading the synopsis but still only 5/10.

Ripper Street the movie - the end is Nighy.

Excellent film. Great performances all round. Victorian feel really well captured.

Loved the musings on illusion/theatre - just a shame the twist was telegraphed from quite so early on.

This held my interest, but only just.

I kept thinking of Blackadder and that coupled with the theatre setting and some hammy acting made the whole thing feel a bit comic despite the unexpectedly large amounts of gore.

I should have written this last week as I'm struggling to remember much more about it, not a good sign. It was ok at the time 5/10

Enjoyed this film at Dulwich Picture House even though sitting at the front near the screen. (couldn't find accessible seat...) Storyline is Sherlock seeks Jack the ripper sort, only to realise too late that it's a Jacqui that's been leading him round the town and up the beaten path. Lots of twists and turns hmmm. Expect to see this on Sunday tv in few years either around Halloween or Christmas. 7/10

I saw this on Sunday and thought it was excellent. The Victorian atmosphere was just right, and I enjoyed pretty boy Douglas Booth trying a Russell Brand accent. Olivia Cooke was great too, but it wasn't difficult to figure out who the golem was - why else would they provide so much background information on one particular character, even when it's seemingly got nothing to do with finding the murderer?

I have to admit though that I still don't know what the motive was behind the random murders.
