Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool

#1 Post by stuartboy » Wed Nov 08, 2017 10:19 pm

Eek. Billy Idiot has got big and huge!
Very stagey and theatrical in style. Lots of swish scene changes with simply walking through a door into a completely different scene. Lots of scenes in foreign places that are simply denoted by a change in backdrop - Los Angeles and New York spring to mind. No expense wasted on location filming. There was a token shot of the Liver Building and Mersey, but this was stock footage and didn't feature any actors.
Also rather hilarious that the same six period cars (70s/80s) were parked in various streets in 3 separate English cities - London, Liverpool and Lancaster.
Only just recognised Kenneth Crannagh at the very last moment.

Solid performances by all (including the hideous cat that sat on top of Stephen Graham's head throughout!)

Surprised to see Babs Broccoli credited as producer. Pity she hadn't put her hand in her pocket and invested some cash in production.

After two previous dodgy pictures (Florida Project and Kill a Sacred Deer) I was slightly apprehensive that things come in three. Thankfully that was not the case.
Jamie Bell has certainly grown up from his Billy Elliot days and nice to see him reunited with Julie Walters.
I had not realised this was based on a true story, assuming they used footage of someone else in the Oscars scene etc.
The thing is, I recognised her as a younger actress, down to the hundreds of black and white movies I used to watch with my granny. Altogether it was an enjoyable film and now going to do a wee bit of googling on her life. 8/10

I really enjoyed this film. I didn't know anything much about Gloria Grahame so it was all new to me. It was quite a sad film obviously as it focused a lot on the end of her life but still quite uplifting as she was quite a happy gregarious character. Well acted by a famous cast and interesting to watch. Recommended

8/10 from me.
I didn't know much about Gloria but now I do.

A beautiful, moving film with great touches of humour.
Interesting transitions into flashbacks.
Great cast with an amazing performance from Annette Bening.
A very classy love story.

Expected a brighter performance from this. Thought there would be a lot more feel good scenes of unlikely romance between age-gapped couple and another for Hollywood with Liverpool, highlighting a real homely connection but everything is left in the trailer where it sits in an entirely different mood.

What we get is very one-note and left me questioning what everybody's true motivation was because the script gives us little to go on. It didn't help that I couldn't get along with Benning's breathy delivery, it would have been an amazing role for an older actress, more widely identified as a sex symbol now like Susan Sarandon or Kim Basinger.

Thought that only happened once. And the backdrop thing felt like somebody just changed the image on a green screen. I'd have probably enjoyed it more if it did have a unique style to it, like a behind the scenes movie feeling.

Interesting inter-generational love story, had no idea it was an adaptation of a memoir. Good performances, enjoyed the film more than I thought I would.

I enjoyed it. I didn't realise she was in Its a Wonderful Life until I read it in the Sunday Times today. A nice wee film. Peter Turner himself plays the theatre janitor in one scene.
7/10 from me.

Wow I didn't know that either, it will certainly add another layer during my annual Christmas visit to Bedford Falls.

OH liked it but I found it a bit stagey and difficult to care about. 5/10

well made film on the whole, once you get over the kissing someone your moms age ickyness lol. but it was real love not social climbing so its fine. Although I think it was a bit callous of Mrs GG to get so involved with a man when she knew her lifespan was much much shorter than his.

some beautiful scenery, although uit did feel like it was converted from a play.
fav 5 films of the year - Tenet, Bill n Ted 3, Invisible Man, JoJo Rabbit, ?
