Searching
Searching was really good. Totally unexpected.
A 16 year old girl goes missing and there are so many twists and turns. A really gripping thriller, full of suspense.
Also you never see anyone in real life, i.e. the whole film is seen through a screen, whether it is a computer, or a camera, one way or another, through Facebook, Messenger, Gmail, Facetime etc, and clues are stumbled on via the various social media. So like modern day living now, when most people are never off their mobiles/laptops/ipads/tablets.
John Cho is brilliant as the grieving father, and Debra Messing is also a good support as the detective assigned to the missing person's case.
9/10

I can. I don't believe anyone would use Windows XP for 15 years and it still be stable and quick. The Sparrow wrote:I can't add anything to this. A most unexpected treasure.prettyxcool wrote:Searching was really good. Totally unexpected.

Really enjoyed Searching . . .a very original idea for a film though definitely one for today's technology.

Re: Searching
I watched the clip before seeing the film. Was not overly drawn in, but hey it was free and thought we can always leave if its too techy or camera shaking.
Well, thank goodness I went, because I was hooked from the start. Really clever idea and story line kept you totally engrossed and as I am not the most techy person, I learnt quite a bit along the way. Mind you when telling my son about the film afterwards, he said I wouldn't get past his security so he would have remained lost.. ha ha.
Anyway very happy to recommend this one. 9/10

Re: Searching
Oh my God, that film was amazing! Cracking, fast-paced story with many twists and turns and an incredible ending. I cried like a baby! And it was entirely told through the Internet and social media, like google searches, FaceTime, online news reports and family videos - stroke of genius. What a piece of cinema - really shows you both the good and bad sides of our online culture! Thoroughly recommended!
You didn't hear a peep from the audience at Greenwich PH! If I sobbed too loudly at the end, I apologise.
10/10
Ps. He must have damn fast broadband to upload all those videos in about two seconds!

Re: Searching
A very effective, reasonably tense, if unsurprisingly gimmicky, thriller with solid performances from Cho and Messing.
If I have a slight criticism it's that an early photo includes a knowing detail that basically gives away what actually happens to Margot.

Spoiler
Show
It involves the photo of her first day at Evercreek High.
They are standing in front of a sign that reveals that the high school is 'the home of the catfish'
Catfish in computer terms is what happens when you 'lure (someone) into a relationship by adopting a fictional online persona'.
Which is of course what Detective Vick's son did on the Youcast site.
I think it's unlikely to be a mere coincidence, rather that the filmmakers probably thought it would be amusing to include such a detail in plain sight.
The scene including that photo is also in the film's trailer if you want to check it out (it's 40 seconds in)

Re: Searching
Our film gang saw it this morning and we loved it. A 21st century realtime social media exploration .. showing just what you can do if your existence is lived through the medium and then the addition of the psychological drama of a teen growing up with a father who cannot deal with the now effects... 7/10
