Overlord

#1 Post by raj101 » Sun Oct 28, 2018 1:54 pm

Perfunctory horror movie, 3 stars for the halloween weekend but otherwise a mere 2. Since it is horror category movie,I'm not going to criticize it for its shortcomings as a war movie.

It doesnt really do anything wrong technically, just not inspired, you know the whole plot to the end once you know what its about, no surprises - so if you are going to see it then best go in reading absolutely zilch about it before hand.

weak for a JJ Abrams.

Decent film, not as good as it could have been. Just couldn’t quite get what the film was aiming for.

Just to note, JJ Abrams did not direct this, he’s a producer, his name is all over the posters, I guess to sell tickets.

2/5,
Upcoming films want to see;
Top Gun Maverick
MI 7 & 8
The Many Saints of Newark
Ghostbusters : Afterlife

Best films seen recently;
Tenet
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
In The Heights
A Quiet Place 2

Took my DD1 to see it with me as my OH doesn't like sunday morning films.
Our film was incredibly loud. The initial scenes vibrated through my body. It was an ok war/horror/zombiesc film. The type of film where you sit back and hold on for the ride - just don't ask too many questions about what you see. Having said that, most horror types have huge holes in the plot. Film had a few 'scary jump' moments but think more could have been done with the lab creatures. Wondering if they left the door open for a follow up film....
Maybe 4/10 (the time did go fast)

Saw this at Kingston Odeon. Not knowing anything about it, I thought it was going to be a war film, in fact it was a terrible zombie pseudo-horror film. The beginning was good, but as soon as they got to the French village it all went rapidly downhill. I feel as if I have wasted two hours of my life. Not worth wasting your money on. 1/10

It's always the same in Kingston Odeon. They have never briefed the staff about what to do with these screening tickets. At first the girl said that we had to exchange the ticket for proper tickets, so I contradicted her and said that we didn't. We turned up at 10:00 am for a 10:30 start and she told us to come back in half an hour - i.e when it starts! As it was it started 10 minutes late and they forgot to turn the lights off until one of the audience went out to remind them.

I really enjoyed this...had a real sense of unnerving throughout the film and a brilliant cast that drew you well into the story. Yeah there's some horror type cliches (characters doing some extra stupid things) but it zipped along and was very entertaining!

Really enjoyed the Julius Avery directed and JJ Abrams produced Overlord despite 10.30am on a Sunday being a really weird time to have a free preview of a gory horror movie.

It starts off in familiar and visceral Saving Private Ryan-style territory with a 'US soldiers on a mission in France' plot before going full on body horror with plenty to keep gore fans happy.

Brit actor Jovan Adepo, previously seen playing Denzel Washington's son in Fences, shows real star promise in the lead and Wyatt Russell is as watchable as ever. While the relatively unknown Mathilde Ollivier is impressive as a French woman helping the US soldiers who proves to be handy with a flamethrower.
Full marks too for Pilou Asbæk who gives great scenery chewing evil Nazi as Wafner.

It looks impressive thanks to Laurie Rose and Fabian Wagner and there's a solid score by Jed 'brother of Justin' Kurzel.

It ain't subtle for sure and takes plenty of liberties with the era of WWII, but this is still superior b-movie fare on a big budget.
