Mary Poppins Returns

#1 Post by McG » Thu Dec 27, 2018 7:43 pm

Surprised to see that no-one has yet commented on this film given it was released 6 days ago.
I had my 3rd viewing of it and find it is growing on me more each time I see it.
I enjoyed it on 1st viewing but did leave feeling that none of the songs had made any impact however, on the 2nd and 3rd viewings, this is being rectified. Ok there is still no Supercalifragilistic or Feed the birds but songs are becoming familiar, particularly the final one Up!
I thought the story was great and the acting by all was excellent . . .special mention must be given to Dick van Dyke and Angela Lansbury who steal their scenes which is wonderful at their ages.
Emily Blunt made a very good Mary Poppins and I'll be surpries if we don't see her in another film of Mary Poppins before too long.
Highly recommend this film as appealing to all ages.
Mark initially was 9/10 and now increased to 9.5/10.
Preferred cinemas: Best: Glasgow Quay, Glasgow Braehead, Glasgow Renfield Street, Glasgow Fort & Paisley
Others I'd go to: Glasgow Showcase Baillieston

What’s the odds on Emily Blunt winning best actress at this years Oscars as it would be the first time that two different females have won the award for playing the same character.

Trivia question - name the film, the two male winners and the character that they played ?

No prizes I’m afraid

saw this when odeon leicester sq reopened last week, they gave everyone a souvenir booklet :P
i thought the trailers looked weak (perhaps cos they havent colour matched it to the finished movie yet) so i wasnt expecting much, but its good, yeah the back story is a bit of a downer, and i think the movie is a touch too long but its a solid 8/10 (the original movie is a 9/10)

lin manuel accent was a bit weak :) and mary's is a bit off :P

I so wanted to love this, but I was a little disappointed, especially since they had Lin-Manual Miranda, thought it would be awesome, look what he has done for Hamilton. I was just not feeling it, and the film did not leave me with a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Each scene was lovely in itself but together, it was a little long and the script much darker, with Disney's obligatory motherless children story, and the sense of profound loss the whole way through is so heavy, and I found it just too much. I also wanted to shout in Panto style, as it was so frustrating, watching them searching and searching, and it was so obvious where it was!

None of the catchy songs of the first one, or wit. A Spoonful of Sugar, Chim Chim Cheree and of course, Super-Cali-Fragil-Istic-Expi-Ali-Docious to name a few! However, this may come, if we hear them, as often as the originals.

The best cameos are from Dick Van Dyke, in his all singing, all dancing glory and Angela Lansbury as the balloon lady with those amazing magical balloons. They both light up the screen.

Emily Blunt, is always very lovely to watch, and is a very good Mary Poppins with a much posher Queen's English and she nailed it, and made it her own.

As a homage to the first, it was ok.

Went to see it this afternoon. I quite enjoyed it, I found it was better than some typical Disney's "sequels" in the sense that it was not trying to be better than the original, nor was it trying to be a simple copy/paste.

That said, I found some scenes to slow a bit the narrative. After this first viewing, I'm not sure these scenes were very important for the overall story, but perhaps I need another watching to fully appreciate the movie in its entirety?

did anyone notice that karen dotrice, jane banks from the original mary poppins, had a cameo role early in the film? she's the lady who asks for directions on cherry tree lane!

5/10 from me - I agree with prettyxcool's review, though I'm not as kind/generous; songs were definitely not catchy enough for me!
5/10 from the mince-pie thief only for 'hot' emily blunt  dick van dyke & angela lansbury
10/10 from godchild 1
1000/10 from godchild 2 (his maths isn't that good) :p

As a massive fan of the original, I did not expect this film to live up to it’s predecessor, but how wrong I was!

With stellar performances from all cast members, the story was great, songs were fantastic, and left me feeling on top of the world!

It was great to see Dick van Dyke in a cameo, just a shame Julie Andrews did not make an appearance.

A great family movie.
