Green Book

#1 Post by ClarkF123 » Sun Oct 14, 2018 2:09 pm

Saw Green Book as the surprise film at the London Film Festival

True story about the unlikely friendship struck up between virtuoso pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and the Italian-American driver Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen) who he hires to drive him on a tour to the deep South.

Wouldn't be surprised if there were Oscar nominations for them both.

Keep an eye out. Expected release is February

The LFF opted for a relatively safe and Oscar-friendly choice for the Surprise Film this year with Peter Farrelly's Green Book but it's an entertaining, crowd-pleasing film that wins you over thanks to two excellent lead performances from Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali.

It's the true story of an Italian-American working class man called Tony (Tony Lip) Vallelonga who gets a job as valet and driver to a refined African-American classically trained pianist called Don Shirley as he goes on a concert tour of the deep south in 1962.

Unsurprisingly the film becomes a culture clash drama with the two men rubbing each other the wrong way throughout but also ultimately forming a bond and learning from each other. It's this dynamic, the humour that evolves from it and the actors that bring it to life that really makes Green Book sing. Ali in particular gives a nuanced impressive performance that deserves to pick up several best actor nominations.

If you're wondering about the title it refers to the annual travel guide used by African-Americans during the Jim Crow era that let them know which hotels, motels and restaurants would cater to them.

What a great film to start this year on. I absolutely loved it, and everyone I spoke to, also loved it. Based on a true story, no preaching here, just telling it as it is. A brilliant African-American pianist, employs an Italian-American to drive and protect him on a tour through the deep south during the racial division of the 60's,

It is so beautifully told, very funny, poignant and brilliantly acted. The two leads were so good together, they really clicked. No stereotypes, even the police men were all different. The fried chicken scene in the car is classic!

I nearly shed a tear at the end. A very satisfying and humorous end.

Really enjoyed this film . . .a similar film to Driving Miss Daisy though grittier as it illustrates an ever changing relationship between the 2 main characters but also the situation faced by black Americans in the early 1960s regardless of their talent or education made worse by the fact it is based on a true story.
I would highly recommend the film.
