The Kid Who Would Be King

#1 Post by stuartboy » Sun Feb 10, 2019 6:01 pm

Saw this today on a bright sunny day. Really enjoyed it. Managed to escape into the film with ease. Am presuming that Alex is the child of Andy Serkis. He shares the surname and he is the spit of him! Funny though - I'm so used to seeing Andy Serkis so heavily made up in prosthetics that I'd likely not recognise him if he looked in my window right now. The boy is a great wee actor in his own right. A chip off the old block.
How funny - I watched the whole film through seeing Sir Ian Mckeller as the older Merlin only to discover in the credits that he was in fact Patrick Stewart! They're not that alike surely. I'm rubbish with faces.
So glad when the film rolled on after a midway hiatus had me thinking aww is that it over when another good third continues. Great self contained story. Great wee characters. Great effects. It's just fine!

Cineworld Unlimited is cheating! ;-)

This was a rather good kids film, much like a four part bbc or cbbc drama. I enjoyed it.

When the undead warriors come into our world everyone but the knights and Merlin disappear. Like Alex's mum in her bedroom when the first one attacks him or the man walking his dog who vanishes when the eclipse happens. When the undead are killed, people return. So she was in the car before the undead appeared, and reappears when they are destroyed
It's taken eight years for Joe Cornish to follow up his debut feature Attack the Block, but it was worth the wait.
A superior kid's adventure film with real heart, big laughs and ambitious scope, led by an impressive young cast including Brit acting royalty offspring Louis Ashbourne Serkis and Angus Imrie.
Fine support too on the adult side with Patrick Stewart, Rebecca Ferguson and Denise Gough.
Adam & Joe fans are well catered for too with a brief amusing cameo from Dr. Buckles (Adam Buxton) himself.
Bonus points also for introducing a sense of peril and horror rarely seen in kid's films since the 80s (having said that, there probably should have been a tonne more child death in it's impressive climax than there was).
It certainly deserves a better reception than it got in regards to box office in the US, so go see it when it's released at the end of the week.

Good film not only for kids with a message that we shouldn’t take what we have around us for granted
