I saw comedian Bo Burnham's wonderful directorial debut Eighth Grade at Sundance London back in June of last year, where it deservedly won the Audience Award. So it's a shame it's taken so long to get a proper release.
Better late than never though as it's a beautifully perceptive comedy drama that perfectly captures the awkwardness and anxiety of adolescence with humour and compassion courtesy of a fine script from Burnham.
Though Elsie Fisher certainly deserves a lot of the credit too as she is excellent in the lead role. Fine support comes from Josh Hamilton as her dad.
One not to be missed.

Re: Eighth Grade
Didn't know this was a horror movie.
Thought the ending was a bit iffy. The tone of the last 10 minutes doesn't fit the film I feel.
Did I miss an explanation about the time capsule boxes? The first one seems to be given as a prize at school, some kind of US tradition or just poorly structured?
Spoiler
Show
I get the second one is just something she does for herself and coincidentally sets up a sequel.

Re: Eighth Grade
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.. i had no real expectations about what it could deliver but sitting through it ,.. i felt the horror of the moment, the anxiety, the tension... the release.. and the hardship of growing up in 21st century culture with the technological bubble.. which tends to isolate rather bond etc.. i felt scared for the young lass.. the ending would indeed be expected along those lines.. 7/10

Re: Eighth Grade
Tried to enjoy but didn't much. Over 83% of the film is a talking head of a really annoying cringey preadolescent female. Those webcasts just became tedious - and like, y'know, they, like, just, y'know, like we're just, like, ramblings.
Dad stole the show. In spades.
Soundtrack was great. The awkwardness of adolescence was wonderfully portrayed. Would have been so much better with more story and those videoed removed.
Banana scene was best bit.

Re: Eighth Grade
Also saw this last year, and was my favourite film of 2018. Almost unbelievable it didn't get any nominations at the major award ceremonies, especially for best original screenplay.
It's such a unique and raw snapshot of high school/secondary school life and that period of change from being solely dependent on your parents to wanting independence and opening your eyes to early adulthood. I don't know why it had the impact it did on me, but I could certainly empathise with certain aspects of it
Loved it. 9.5/10

Re: Eighth Grade
I thought this was a pretty exception film. Excellent lead performance from Elsie and also from Josh as her father.
One of those films that has perfectly judged its timing - felt really poignant and thought provoking. It was also one of the best depictions of growing up as a young female teen that I've seen.
Bo Burnham clearly has great respect and empathy for his subjects.
