Rocketman

#1 Post by tonethestone » Thu May 16, 2019 8:46 pm

I’m a fan of Elton John’s music, I’ve seen him Live and he was great, but I just found this film utterly bizarre, its very basic by numbers in the main, but some very odd out of place scenes.. Main actor playing Elton was ok, but the film is too basic and doesn't dig enough and every actor in the film appears to be on hyperdrive or an exaggerated person of the real version.
I wasn’t a fan of Bohemian Rhapsody either so maybe just not a fan of music bio films.
2/5.

Or maybe not a Dexter Fletcher (yes him) fan! He directed about a third of BoHo after Bryan Singer was fired.

Then again, not liking that film only means that you are still sane.

As a fan of both Taron Egerton and Elton John, I had night hopes for this film, and I was NOT disappointed!

A fantastically told story of Elton john’s rise to stardom, in a funny, yet extremely moving way.

The way the hit songs were used throughout was really good and the dips into fantasy were well incorporated.

The story of Elton’s early life was very sad, but the way he has overcome all the obstacles in his life is utterly inspirational!!!!

A fabulous watch

EDIT: I had a 2nd viewing today and appreciated the film even more 2nd time round.
Marks 9/10

I enjoyed the film even though there were a few odd scenes eg the neighbours dancing in the street. I remember Elton John from early on and really like his music, having seen him in concert a number of times. What made the biggest impact on me was the relationship of his parents with each other and with him. Seeing this background to his life really explains why he went off the rails for a number of years but been sober and clean now for over 20 years. . . .if he hadn't got clean we may have lost his talent long ago. I'm looking forward to a second viewing.
Marks 8/10
ps I was very interested in John Reid as he is from my town and went to the boy's school across from my girl's school. . .he definitely comes over as not good! I don't understand how John Reid got in to the music industry management while he was still very young. My older brother does remember John Reid booking Elton John in to a small hotel across from the school . . .obviously before he really made it big!

Loved it. A lot in common with Sunshine on Leith. The musical numbers in this were really inventive and surreal and conveyed info about the character. Wasn't afraid to get down in the dirt. Taron Egerton superb.

Did not know much of Elton, but always enjoyed his songs.

Such a sad family life. A shy boy, but flamboyant on stage. Good mix of fantasy and greatest hits. Taron Egerton did well in the role. Jamie Bell so good as Bernie Taupin too. Such a great partnership that continues. A well rounded film. 8/10

Good movie, very touching, but I'm really not sure how much is fact and how much is fiction for the film's needs...
