Late Night

#1 Post by ladams888 » Mon Jun 03, 2019 11:04 pm

Saw this tonight at a fairly full Wimbledon Odeon. Although I find Emma Thompson sanctimoniously hypocritical in real life, I really enjoyed seeing her in this film. She plays Katherine Newbury, a late night talk show host in the US who finds that her ratings are falling, and needs to inject new life into her show. The part was absolutely made for her – as she stole every scene that she appeared in. Mindy Kaling played Molly (or No 8) who, as a female Indian was hired as a writer by the show mainly to boost their diversity – as she had no formal writing experience - but who actually comes up with many ideas to increase the ratings. The film had an intelligent and well-written screenplay (actually written by Mindy Kaling). There were many laugh-out-loud moments – mostly in scenes where Emma Thompson was involved. My last two films were Booksmart and I Love my Mum - both of which I loathed (with a vengeance). This film has restored my faith in humanity! My Score 8/10

This buzzed along, really good. EmmaThompson once again brilliant at playing posh english lady, she was born for these roles!

4stars.

Found this film very dull, good performance's by the leads but I didn't care about any of the cliché characters, boring and not funny.

Unfunny comedy about an egotistical show host more interested in her ratings than her ailing husband.

I liked it very much. Thompson was shining, Kaling was funny!

Saw the film on Monday. Thought it was good but not great. Predictable in places but still a few laughs

Saw the film on Monday, would agree it is good but not great, missing some good humor.

Mediocre at best. Joins a long list of very similar films made in America about the American TV or movie industry. Not one to watch again nor add to DVD collection.
Eight or so writers in her team, yet only 2 or 3 actually spoke. A very bland screenplay.

Molly might have been more interesting with an Indian accent, it sounds funny in the West.

I watched some of the Mindy Project. She talks too fast like shes trying to prove shes superbrainy. I hated people like that at med school - jabbering fast to prove you are more intelligent than the ill patient you are talking to .....is such an intelligent thing to do. But the shows not bad actually, that aside.
