Re: Avatar
Saw this last night at the IMAX and loved it. It was packed but not full even though it was supposedly sold out and started late which annoyed me - it was so late as it was! Anyway, an usher introduced the film and had us all laughing which was nice... however... about an hour in, the picture went out! Pitch black. Really disappointing - apparently the power went out or something. The usher returned to boos but did really well and by the end the crowd loved him again. Film was restored in just under 10 minutes. It did mean that it didn't finish until after midnight and everyone rushed for the last trains.
So the film. Yes it's over the top, but it's sci-fi, what does one expect? Also a tad predicatable in places, but not so much as to ruin the film. I thought it had something for everyone and would happily see it again. The 3D aspect was fab, although I think it would have been better had we been more central and further back. I did feel as though I was IN the forest at times! OH gave it a 10, me probably an 8 (too long but didn't feel that long most of the time as I was so engrossed) so I'll average it at a 9/10.

Re: Avatar
My lordy, you people hard to please sometimes!
With respect, I don't agree with any of the hater comments on here...
If anyone has been put off going to watch this, having booked their tickets already, here are my views...
"Couldn't tell the difference from 2D or 3D in the opening 20mins" ...nope, the 3D is instantaneous.
"The 3D is grey"...nah, it was wonderfully colourful.
"The glasses were restrictive"...I wore my glasses underneath the 3D specs and forgot I was wearing both, until I turned to my gurl who was looking super chill in her shades.
"Plotline is ropey"...Tip: Don't see Where The Wild Things Are if you care for story -beautifully crafted without a plot (intentional).
Just sayin'.

Re: Avatar
Just came back from Pandora...I mean Avatar in glorious 2D and enjoyed the hell out of it. Its a typical Cameron film structure wise. Story is simple, its obvious and its even totally predictable (maybe because I saw Battle for Terra which is exactly the same story) but its a bloody great ride. The visuals are absolutely breathtaking and I am so glad I chose to see it in 2D without the gimmicky 3D distraction. Pandora felt real and had a Lord of the Rings scope that you can only enjoy on the big screen. The Navi was totally believable. The CGI was so good that I didnt remember at all that I am watching CGI.
But this is not Cameron's best film, not even close. I didnt expect it to be, anyway. Aliens, Terminator, and Terminator 2 are his best films. Its not a game changer either. Lord of the Rings was the game changer and is the one to beat for pure epic storytelling. But Avatar delivered a sumptuous feast of cinema for me tonight.
I enjoyed it enough to see it again this time in 3D so I can make the comparisons.
8/10

Are you out of your mind?? That's like going to Disneyland without going on the rides!TheyCallMeMrGlass wrote:The visuals are absolutely breathtaking and I am so glad I chose to see it in 2D without the gimmicky 3D distraction.
What are you expecting the 3D version to look like?...A pop-up book??
Come back when you've seen the 3D version...

Re: Avatar
Indeed, I have a special gift of detaching myself from my mind, problem is I dont have an avatar to host it. I had seen a 20 minute minute preview of Avatar and the 3d was distracting. Hence why I chose 2D for my first viewing. And yes, you've hit the nail. Pop up books is a bloody good analogy, mate.blackiceboy wrote:Are you out of your mind?? Re: Avatar
Just re-watched it with a friend in a normal digital projected 3D cinema.
Hated it, absolutely hated it, except when the humans were kicking some arse, only good people in it were the US Army, cos they weren't afraid to be un-PC and actually be useful in shutting up those bloody Na'Vi.
4/10 at best.

Re: Avatar
Saw it this afternoon in 3D and was very impressed by it: I've stopped trying to pick holes or looking for an original story / plotline in most of the films I see and just try to enjoy them.
This one ticked quite a few boxes for me and was pleasant story well told with lots of pretty impressive scenery. I was drawn into the story from very early on and felt connected to the good guys (of course) as soon as the plot was revealed. Lots of parallels with history, money talking, the might of the capitalist system, people's attitude minorities - some of which were very obvious, others less in your face.
8.5/10 from me.

I once went hiking with M. C. Escher. It was uphill all the way there and uphill all the way back.
Re: Avatar
not planning on reading anyone's reviews on here yet, will make my own mind up tomorrow after I've seen it in IMAX 3D at the new odeon metrocentre

Re: Avatar
Avatar continues to enjoy box office success. (source: Yahoo)
James Cameron's Avatar seems to be benefiting from box office word of mouth.
The sci-fi epic has taken over £150 million worldwide since its release last weekend - and had the fifth best opening outside the US. Despite a huge blizzard that struck the East Coast, Avatar still took £45 million in America. And impressively there was only a three per cent drop from Saturday's box office receipts to Sunday. Usually, the drop is much higher.
Fox president of domestic distribution Bruce Snyder beamed, "I don't ever remember seeing this before."
Not that Cameron will be too surprised. Before the film was released, he predicted that word of mouth will prevail and that Avatar will enjoy repeat business.
