Super 8

#1 Post by TheyCallMeMrGlass » Wed Jun 01, 2011 11:31 pm

Directed by JJ Abrams (Lost, Star Trek, Cloverfield) and produced by Steven Spielberg (some shark film, dinosaur movie, and a movie with an alien who wants to phone home).

Teaser:
Trailer:

This is one of 3 films I have been most anticipating this year. The plot, as is usual with a JJ Abrams film, is tightly shrouded in secrecy and I always like that. But the trailer has got a very 80s nostalgic Spielbergian feel to it which excites me no end. I always see JJ Abrams as a young spielberg, he even talks and behaves like him, exhuding the same energy that Spielberg used to have in his young prime. He also confesses to idolising Spielberg a long time before this dream collaboration.

Anyway, its going to be released in August but some critic screenings have already been held and all but one are giving positive ratings according to the Rottentomatoes critics accumulation. Its at 91% from 11 critics including Total Film

Everyone seems to be wanting to see this but im just not feeling it. Nothings really grabbing me from any released material. J.J Abrams sure but he's only done 1 season of all the shows he's started (Fringe was the only one thats awesome and Alcatraz sounds promising) and even then he was a co-exec producer. So its not enough to generalise him to be the "best person evah". His Mission Impossible was messy IMO but his Star Trek was brilliant. But the trailers don't look good, they seem rather....ordinary. Which is bad for a movie about quite the opposite.

Not saying JJ Abrams is the best eva but he shows promise. He isnt at the height of Spielberg, that's impossible but I see Abrams like Spielberg's prodigy. The trailer gives me goosebumps because it takes me back to the 80s where my nostalgic mind and soul dwells often to a time I when was the same age as the protaginists in the movie trailer. I see this trailer and straightaway think of ET, The Explorers, Stand By Me, Lost Boys, The Goonies all at once. So I understand why younger generations wont get that vibe from it.

The trailer doesn't do much for me (seems to go the alien route again) but reading the synopsis on IMDB I am intruiged! Sounds very cool :D

I'm going to add myself to the queue who are looking forward to seeing this.
I think for once perhaps, the trailer is not giving too much away?

this is exactly what JJ Abrams ans S Spielberg said when they introduced their new (they presented this as a world premiere, but I remember seing this very trailer in cinema the week before  ) trailer at the MTV Movie Awards last weekend...
They kind of ranted about trailers that disclose the entire plot o/
