A Lonely Place To Die
I saw this on Tuesday night. It's an efficient thriller about five mountaineers who stumbled across an air-pipe sticking up out of the ground. Buried beneath they find a young girl in a small chamber. They decide to try and get her to the safety of the nearest village across dangerous terrain, but the girl's kidnappers aren't too far behind and will do whatever they can to get her back.
A Lonely Place to Die is a promising film. The director's decision to learn mountaineering himself really pays off as he and his crew are able to film in some impressively dangerous looking places. It looks fantastic, the Scottish Highlands put to excellent use. It also moves at a fast non-stop pace, barely pausing for breath.
The downside of the pacing though is a complete lack of characterisation. The characters are one-dimensional archetypes for the most part (or in the case of the lead character played by Melissa George, barely even that). As a result it becomes hard to care whether they live or die.
The cast do their best. Melissa George is actually very good despite such a thinly written role and Sean Harris is very good and suitably menacing as one of the kidnappers. The rest are either forgettable or underused.
With a better script, this could have been a great thriller, as it stands it's merely a passable one.

Re: A Lonely Place to Die
I am quite looking forward to this film, went to that area for my last holiday and the photographer I met told me some really interesting stories about Melissa George hanging out with the locals.

Re: A Lonely Place To Die
It's a pity that Sky isn't offering this one in the North East, but we can't have them all. I hope that there will be some alternative screenings. It looks promising.
