People, the cake talk is killing me. I am trying to cut down... not really going very well... and I have a strage longing for a nice piece of victoria sponge. Not sure why or why I'd not rather have chocolate cake... but there you go... strange cravings... perhaps I can get hubby to make one again :)

Well Anakin, it is a food thread. But I can change the subject slightly for you: OH is vegetarian and is out all day today, so I was going to have some MEAT for a change. But he suggested I eat up the last portion of the chilli he made earlier this week, and as it was nice, and I'm lazy, I probably shall

As for the weather, yes, today is a bit murky, but (in the south, anyway), I think September has been fantastic. Mainly dry, sunny, warm or even positively hot and definitely the best September I can remember.

Quite right Ms Thrifty - I started the thread because I do love food whether it's eating it, talking about it or shopping for it - and I like to torture myself reading about all the cakes! :red:
It's the opposite for me and my hubby - I only eat chicken whereas he eats everything... Wednesdays are my veggie day (not worth explaining, honestly) so it's the day of the week we have separate dinners and he indulges in his favourite... steak! The rest of the time we eat a lot of chicken - I wonder if it's bad for you? I'm trying to convince hubby that eating too much red meat is not good for you, but he just shrugs it off... although to be fair he eats less of it because we now live together.

Oh, and by the way, my mum is the most amazing cook ever so I was pleased to have made a chicken dish she taught me really really well last night, even if I do say so myself. Only slight adjustments needed, but hubby left not a trace (having eaten mum's at the weekend)!

Well, my OH would say that he drinks anything - but I'm not sure if drinking is included here. Since he has taken over the cooking, I eat everything I'm given, though I try to steer him in particular directions if he asks for suggestions. I suspect his turning vegetarian has something to do with my ceasing to cook, if only subliminally. I didn't conciously rebel or make a decision and it's fair to say that the more I got into walking, the less time I had to cook. But there has to be some significance in the fact that he gave up meat entirely without warning and just when I had a freezer full of pheasant casserole, merguez sausages, etc. I had to resort to taking meat items to work and giving them away, just to get rid of them. One of my colleagues, at least, did very well from this while it lasted!

I miss OH's meat cooking, too - he used to make great roast chicken and steak and kidney pie. It's not even as if I've ever been much of a meat eater myself, but I do like a little now and then. Still, I'm used to not eating it as my sister has been vegetarian for over 20 years and OH's brother was vegan for a while (now merely vegetarian), which was very difficult to cater for without notice.

I am in the opposite situation to you, Ms thrifty. I am a very longstanding vegetarian with an OH who is not only a meat eater but has been told by his consultant to eat plenty of red meat to avoid getting more kidney stones.

As he is medically retired and dependant on me for all his meals I have to go along with this. It is not so much the handling and cooking meat that bothers me as eating is one of the great pleasures in his life, it is having to go to the bother of cooking 2 seperate meals. As I usually do his first I sometimes can't be bothered to cook for myself and end up with something easy like a sandwich.

Vegan can definitely be quite hard w/o notice. My mum's alwys been veggie but she always cooked meat for the rest of the family (she had no choice, really) so she's happy to cook it even if not eating it. I won't let her do any of the prep anymore though - seems a bit wrong now we're all grown up. So maybe, especially as he used to eat meat, you should convince him to make a roast anyway ;) Any chance?

Gosh, I don't envy you there Bevvy, in any respect, but I do admire your willingness to do whatever your OH needs. It is surprising that there is no substitute for red meat which will meet his medical needs - supposing he had been the vegetarian? The part with which I can identify is the not wanting the bother of cooking a 2nd meal and settling for a sandwich, except that in my case, it would be the bother of cooking at all. OH gets very fed up if he doesn't feel well and I still don't want to take a turn.
