It gets 10 for entertainment value but 0 for originality. Half way through I thought this must have been made by some american producer who wanted to copy the success of Mamma Mia and obviously they even name check that musical in the 2nd half. How many times have we seen a little country girl moving to Hollywood and end up down and out as a waitress or stripper?? How many times have we seen young idealists fighting evil developers?
Don't get me wrong, it's very enjoyable throughout. The populist in me really wanted to give it 8/10, but the critic in me said no way. And it's more pop ballads than rock. I guess the fairest score would be a very enjoyable 5/10. I would happily watch it again
I agree the plot is weak, which is why I am a bit worried about reviews next week. I used to review myself too and I certainly wouldn't give the show a 10/10 from that POV as I am currently happily doing. It's all about the experience and interaction with the audience, unfortunately a press night audience likely won't be into it as much as people who pa*d for the show because they like 80s music for instance.
As for the Mama Mia reference, this changes continuously. Oliver WAS in Mama Mia, but the Lonny character also used Fiyero in Wicked before (which was my favourite because I love Wicked!) and another time just commented on Oliver's photo saying he was very good looking.
I don't think it's necessarily copying the success of Mama Mia either, I'd rather say We Will Rock You if I have to mention any. But there's so many shows like that at the moment (American Idiot, Back Beat, Divas) that it's more becoming it's own genre rather than one copying the other.
