Re: FMUKkers' Scores for Movies 2012

1. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows 4/10 Less dark, less funny, too much slow-motion and an underlying sense of familiarity. Disappointing.
2. The Artist 10/10 A wonderful tribute to cinema both early and new, this is unique, elegantly shot and beautifully acted.
3. War Horse 7/10 The cinematography of Spielberg's sweeping epic is brilliant, but the pace and plot is inferior to that of the successful stage play.
4. Carnage 9/10 Great performances, impeccable timing and a superior script. Stunningly funny.
5. The Grey 5/10 Slightly more intelligent than your average survival movie, but still rather dull.
6. The Muppets 9/10 Self-referential, brilliant humour, effortless charm, a wide range of celebrity cameos and dazzling songs by Bret Mackenzie. Oh, and Muppets. Just brilliant.
7. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D 3/10 Pretentious, badly acted and with one of the worst scripts ever witnessed in sci-fi cinema, George Lucas' return to the Star Wars universe was certainly a colossal disappointment. The 3D re-release doesn't make it any better.
8. Titanic 3D 8/10 Cameron's technical virtuosity is more than evident in the second half of this film and despite its flaws (bad dialogue, muddled execution) it still holds out to this very day.
9. Eraserhead 9/10 Bizarre, repulsive and disturbing are three words that are themselves gargantuan understatements of David Lynch's first feature. Utterly compelling.
10. Laura 9/10 With a script written with a goose-quill dipped in venom, Laura is a spellbinding film about loyalty, jealousy and eroticism. Pure noir.
11. Black Pond 8/10 Frequently hilarious, completely odd and very well acted. A surprising achievement for a low-budget first feature.
12. The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists 3D 7/10 Although not quite as compelling or funny as some of the previous Aardman films, it is certainly animated in a very wonderful and beautiful way.
13. Citizen Kane 10/10 A marvel of cinema - Welles pulls out all the stops here, giving us a powerful portrayal of a ruthless newspaper tycoon. Brilliantly shot and lighted.
14. The Woman in Black 5/10 A frustratingly shallow plot and a miscast lead are part of a film which has neither the sense of terror nor memorability of the novel and stage play. Disappointing.
15. John Carter 3D 6/10 It is daft and the script makes no sense, but Andrew Stanton's ambitious new film is a visual treat - although somewhat forgettable.
16. 21 Jump Street 4/10 Crass and unintelligent, with a few laughs but too much forced swearing.
17. In Darkness 8/10 Harrowing, profound, disorientating and brilliantly acted.
18. The Hunger Games 9/10 Absolutely fantastic - violent, provocative and brilliantly shot. Jennifer Lawrence's performance is beyond excellent.
19. The Cabin in the Woods 7/10 A brilliant horror film which is simultaneously a critique of the genre. Wonderfully non-conformist.
20. Avengers Assemble 3D 8/10 A triumph - a fantastic script means we spend enough time with the characters and the action sequences are phenomenal.
21. Prometheus 3D 6/10 Nowhere near as bad as some may suggest, but Scott's prequel-or-not to Alien is a plotty mess and a disappointment.
22. Moonrise Kingdom 9/10 Fantastic acting from the two young leads, stylish cinematography, a hilarious script - an absolute gem of a film.
23. Salute 6/10 This documentary provides great archive footage of the 1968 Olympics, but is much too unfocused and needs to say a lot more about the lives of the two black protestors who made it history.
24. The Dark Knight Rises 9/10 A moody, sensational end to Christopher Nolan's brilliant Batman trilogy - one of the greatest films of the year.
25. Paranorman 3D 7/10 John Carpenter meets John Hughes in this stop-motion animation that loses heat in the final act but is very well put together.
26. Taken 2 4/10 Neeson is pretty good in this but the script does not do him justice at all and the film is a mess.
27. Sinister 6/10 I'm not going to pretend that I wasn't scared. This had some decent moments but was dogged down by a silly premise and its forgettable nature.
28. Looper 8/10 Don't let the plot holes and tonal shifts distract you. This is brilliant, mind-bending sci-fi, with some fantastic acting, ballsy action sequences and impressive cinematography.
29. Argo 8/10 Precise direction and some magnificent 70s moustaches - a tense and surprisingly hilarious dramatisation of one of the most intriguing CIA cases in history.
30. Skyfall 9/10 Sam Mendes' artistic sensibility is not lost on the 23rd Bond film, which is so quintessentially Bond it knocks you back in your seat - a camp villain, globe-trotting, and the usual share of Bond girls - but with a jaw-dropping plot. Just astonishing.
31. The Hunt 9/10 Gripping and relevant Danish drama about child sex abuse allegations and the mass hysteria that surrounds it - very well portrayed.
32. The Hobbit IMAX 3D 24fps 8/10 It's in about a million different viewing formats, but despite deviations from the proper story this is a very pleasing return to Middle-Earth filled with humour and stunning visuals. Martin Freeman triumphs.

Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2012" club. I saw 32, which is rather delightful.. I beat Mr. Glass on free films but he narrowly inched me out on total films seen.

Member number 33 of the "100 free films in 2011" club. I saw 20, interestingly enough. My more realistic target was to see more free films than TheyCallMeMrGlass. I lost.
