A Royal Affair
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1276419/
A young queen, who is married to an insane king, falls secretly in love with his physician - and together they start a revolution that changes a nation forever.
Bit of a costume drama here and a piece of Danish history.
Can someone keep seats for us tonight please, I always have difficulties finding the Framestore.

Re: A Royal Affair
As screenings go, this one was a dream. Surrounded by friends, excited chatter beforehand, but everyone shut right up and sat stock still, and apart from two latecomers in our row there were no interruptions. Toilet users were unobtrusive and I couldn't see any mobiles being out anywhere. The only criticism I have is that it started 10 minutes late and the film was over 2 hours long! I started a yawn-fest towards the end. We got a questionnaire to fill in that featured heavily on the use of subtitles and whether it annoyed us. Not really. I was fascinated by the Danish language that is often close to the German one but more often completeley different - I only understood bits and pieces and was quite amused by the "kong".
The film was very enjoyable. I am a sucker for period dramas and this one didn't disappoint. I did find Caroline a little bland but the guy who played Kong Christian was rather fantastic. As for Struensee - I do have a liking for guys with ponytails but I must say that he sure got romanticised here. He also seemed too old for the role. But all in all, a piece of history solidly brought to life.
7.5/10

Re: A Royal Affair
Brilliantly acted. A very moving film, based on the true story of a British Princess marrying a Danish king and finding out that her new husband is mad. The costumes, scenery, screenplay, locations, cinematography were all excellent. I found the interior lighting was especially authentic - with lots of flickering candles, as it would have been in the 18th century. I left the cinema wanting to know more about the history behind the film with all of its intrigues and plotting. Watching a subtitled film does not bother me in the least - it takes about five minute to get used to it and then your brain takes over, letting you watch the film while your brain reads the subtitles. The only downside was it was just a tad too long - I'm sure it could have come in under 2 hours with a few cuts. I loved the screening room - it was like renting a small cinema for an intimate party of friends - with, thank goodness, no popcorn or hotdog smells. I would give the film 9/10

We really enjoyed this too and it turned out to be a birthday treat for me albeit a teeny bit too long. Even though the seats were pretty superior I was starting to think about wriggling (but I couldn't cos I was sitting right in front of Beate
).
An interesting story, the acting was superb and the costumes were wonderful.

Re: A Royal Affair
I came in just at the brink of 6:30pm so I rushed briefly past the small group of fmukers (MariaLionza, Jeancomp, Ejwrank, Beate+Oh) in the back row, puffing and saying a mumbled Hi to them in fear of being smacked by them should the film start at that moment. But as it happens it started 10mins late and enough time to catch my breath and watch the film
A delightful film, very well made and made more fascinating for the fact its based on a true story. Agree with Ladams888's keen eye on the visual details and cinematography, the film was indeed superbly framed and composited. The performances by the male cast were brilliant, although the actress who plays Princess Caroline was a little too deinty in her expressions, couldnt quite define her thoughts at times, probably trying to mimic Mona Lisa or something. But she looked the part of a beautiful princess disillusioned at her marriage to simpleton minded child-like King (super performance from him).
The storyline almost plays like a true Shakespaerean tragedy. Though the title of the film pretty much serves as a basic synopsis for the movie, there is so much more to it in how the affair was pivotal to the revolutionary changes in the country. The power struggles that ensue in parallel with the extremely risky affair between the Princess and the King's Physicist made for a riveting drama. The performance of the actor who plays the secretly liberal minded Physicist was also great and contrastingly subtle to the more louder performance of the King. (BTW I recognise this guy who played the Physicist straight away as the main baddie in Casino Royal!)
So well made and very rewarding film, I am now going to try read up more on the actual history as I am sure, as with most historical based movies, liberties are taken for the sake of bringing a good story onto the screen. That's the nature of cinema and we shouldnt really be to critical of truth twisting.

I also enjoyed this and it was good to have such an attentive audience. I feel ashamed to know so little (OK --
in truth, nothing!) about Danish history so this was enlightening in every way. I thought it was beautifully shot and what a change to have a costume drama that wasn't English!

I too am so excited about watching this as I love period dramas (my all time favourite genre) and I only know a tad about Danish history as I want to go to Copenhagen so have been reading up about places to visit (I'm very boring and like to read about places before I go) so it will be my dream filmejwrank wrote:I also enjoyed this and it was good to have such an attentive audience.
