Free events to celebrate the reopening of Leicester Square
http://showfilmfirst.wordpress.com/
An array of interactive displays, costume characters and personal appearances will bring the new-look Leicester Square to life in a special film-themed event running from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 May. Free to the public, the live event will showcase the quality and diversity of films coming to West End cinemas in 2012 in a variety of engaging ways – while also offering a glimpse of the spectacular film events hosted in Leicester Square during previous years.
Get down to the square for:
interactive preview zone, in which visitors may select and view their own choice of content such as trailers, compilations and games on digital iTables;
a family zone with entertainers, face painters, green-screen photo opportunities for audiences aged 3 plus;
a performance zone that will feature a film quiz presented by Alex Zane, a Q&A with the world’s leading stuntman Vic Armstrong as well as a movie fencing demonstration, and an insight into life as a leading film journalist with Empire magazine.
Lots more going on including:
a celebration of Film4 FrightFest with its director, Alan Jones, as the 13th edition of the fantasy film festival comes to Leicester Square in August. Members of the public are invited to gather at this session from noon on Sunday 27 May dressed as zombies to participate in a ‘Lawn of the Dead’ extravaganza in Leicester Square’s gardens.
Free cinema screenings in the Square during the event include Top Cat – The Movie and Red Tails, while there will be appearances by movie costume characters including from Ice Age 4 and Madagascar. Free two-week adventure holiday for 16-yr-olds
Register online - only available in England
https://nationalcitizenservice.direct.gov.uk/
What: Two week hol + one week day camp for free, or up to £80
Get by: June 2012
How: Enter details on the National Citizen Service page (parents get your child to do it) and to find out about your nearest scheme. You must be in school year 11 and have turned 16 by 31 Aug 2012. There's no official end date but NCS recommends you book as soon as possible.
About half the partners don't charge for the NCS, otherwise the max is £80 and meals are included. Bursaries are available as providers aren't allowed to turn away kids for financial reasons. This has been popular with MoneySavers before, see feedback below.
What do I get? There are 30,000 places in all areas of England for the NCS. The three-week scheme takes place from Jun-Aug 2012. Exact dates vary per provider.
Week one (residential): Outdoor activities focusing on personal and social development.
Week two (residential): Team tasks to help the local community. This week is also in a residential setting, but in participants' local areas.
Week three (at home): Design & deliver a social plan to make a positive change to local communities.
After those three weeks, kids are encouraged to do 30 hours social work in their own time. They'll also get a certificate signed by the Prime Minister.
The detail: The NCS is a Government initiative and the providers include local charities such as Changemakers, Catch 22 and The Challenge Network. Qualified instructors and trained group leaders are around at all times to help with any problems.
