Avatar Day
Re: Avatar
I went to see this last night at theMetrocentre in Imax 3D, avoiding most of the reviews so I could make my own mind up.
And all I can say is WOW, absolutely amazing.
The film, I wasn't expecting a gritty storyline and it didn't dissapoint, it was ok.
I saw influences of :
Iraq/Iran - Oil war.
The Matrix - given the choice of ordinary life or life of hero
Of course Ferngully - the importance mother earth plays in the life cycle
Then the love interest, yada yada yada.
But all that aside, this film was made for Imax 3D screens. It filled the screen and the cinema with outstanding visual and audio, at times I had to lift my glasses to see what was happening in the 'real' world.
You could tell it was cgi, of course, no getting away from it, but the trailers we see on tv look more like a cgi cartoon. This felt like a film.
The long running time flew past.
The added luxury of the gallery seats made it more comfortable although at times I wished I was closer to the screen to feel more involved.
The only slight nag I had was the large cumbersome Imax glasses, intially covered in fingerprints, but they felt huge, like Dierdre Barlow in the eighties. If they could be made more wrap around so my eyes couldn't see out the sides it would have been all the more enjoyable.
That said, maybe I'm being too picky.
If you are stuck for something to b*y someone this christmas, or want to treat yourself. Get a ticket to see Avatar at an Imax 3D screen before it stops being screened.
Apparently James Cameron said this film will sell based on word of mouth and repeat viewing and walking out of there last night all I wanted to do was tell people to see it.

Re: Avatar
Not only was this visually stunning, but also had a great plot, for some reason it reminded me of District 9 (the whole idea of a human fighting for an alien race that is deemed sub-normal, and the ending bore a few parellels!), but the time flew by, the only complaint i had was the 3-d visuals gave me a headache by the end. But overall i cant give this any less than 10/10
for the way its pushed the boundaries of what cinema can achieve and certainly opened up doors for other directors to create masterpieces with the new technology cameron has created

Re: Avatar
We saw this film last night at Boldon. They are still showing it on the largest screen, and it was still attracting a large audience - about 50% full for the 5.20pm screening. That's about 200/250 people.
I thought it was absolutely amazing. I have nothing new to add to the previous 15 pages of comments. It was visually breathtaking in places, and I was bowled over by the whole 3D experience. 9/10 from me.

Re: Avatar
Avatar banned in China
Avatar has become China's most successful movie after making nearly £47 million, but that hasn't stopped the country's government pulling the film from some of its cinemas over fears that it could cause political unrest.
The China Film Group, which is run by the state, believes the plot of human colonists attempting to demolish an alien village for its resources steers too close to a very sensitive issue in China at the moment.
Millions of Chinese people have been evicted from their homes to make room for high rises and government infrastructure projects, reports The LA Times. Avatar's success has also angered some Chinese officials, who fear the film's popularity takes too much market share from their domestic films.

Had a look on the internet and it appears only the 3D version of Avatar is banned in China

Not according to

'2D showings of Avatar will now be pulled from Chinese cinemas, but film fans can still see 3D showings of the sci-fi epic. However, there are so few 3D cinema screens in China, it's essentially a theatrical ban for the Golden Globe-winning movie'.
