My Brother The Devil (2012)

#2 Post by filmcat » Thu Sep 06, 2012 12:20 am

This movie was fantastic. A roller-coaster of emotions and some surprises. The characters were so well acted and believable.

I like to lean towards a low budget urban raw movie where I can. (this genre seems to tickle my movie taste buds more for some reason)

Cineworld Haymarket screen one hosted the film & Q+A. (was about 3/5 full and tickets seemed to be available all day)

Sally El Hosaini (writer/director) is somebody to watch. She could be the female equivalent of Noel Clarke. (apparently the film is going to be included in the London Film Festival)

God I hope not (have you seen the trailer for The Knot?). Hopefully she'll be much better than that. Just as this is much better than the likes of Kidulthood and Adulthood. I thought this was a very strong effort with some really impressive performances. Also did a good job at keeping you on your toes as to where the story was going. Really well directed too, which bodes well for El Hosaini's future. Which will hopefully not include writing the kind of simplistic drivel that Clarke is now apparently concentrating on.

I really enjoyed this as well. When the Q&A started, I was really surprised to see it was directed by a woman, but for a first time, I thought she was excellent. the cast I think were mainly locals, and not actors, which brought a realness to the film. the lad who played Mo, it was his first film and he was so good in the joint lead - its great that both he and Sally are nominated as Best Newcomer or something like tha for the BFI Festival.

My only problem was that I'd recently watched A Touch of Cloth, so the 'street talk' made me chuckle :red: :shifty: .

I received a tweet from James Floyd who plays Rash after I mentioned it yesterday.

Apparently I have to tell the universe about the film. Quite a tall order.

Well you have made a start, kevinknapman, by telling FMUK.

I was also at Haymarket last night and the film was impressive. Amazed to hear the director say that the budget was under £1 million. I couldn't understand all of the dialogue (even though I live in Hackney!) but it was so well acted with lots of newcomers and certainly deserves a good release. That seems possible now that it has been included in The London Film Festival.

What a gem of a film - the best real "street film" by non-actors I have seen so far. Great storylines and mixed emotions. Would never have thought it was directed by a half Egyptian woman - definitely see it if you havent. Release in November I think.

Put together a full write-up for this as it definitely deserves some support for its opening weekend. A fantastic debut for Sally El Hosaini.
