Pretty rubbish all told, especially the second half. The first half was alright, but pretty much ruined by someone's phone loudly ringing FIVE times. Why on earth couldn't they turn it off? Everyone was grumbling, the actors were clearly pissed off. Bit of a waste of time. Theatre was only half full at the start, and then maybe a third more left at the halfway point.
I was at last nights as well. Couldn't believe that phone. Unbelievable that the owner didn't switch it off after the first time. I liked that the actors worked it into the script "beheading... the punishment for those who don't switch off their phones!"

I enjoyed the Queens bit. A fun idea and done with some nice humour. I admit I didn't stay for the 2nd half. I had a splitting headache and had been warned the 2nd half wasn't as good. Sounds like I made a good choice.

Link to recent Guardian article on the sudden glut of Chekhov productions and differing interpretations. It includes discussion of the ill-received Vaudeville version referred to above.

Liars! 8O
:bwl: This must be someone's idea of a joke! I guess promising a comedy sells tickets, but what good is it if people are so disappointed that they leave at the interval. I love the play, but it's nothing but a tragedy. Can't wait till Monday.

Thanks Thrifty for the link. Didn't know that Vakhtangov is coming to the Noel Coward Theatre. I would love to see their version of Uncle Vanya - it will be the ultimate experience (even though reading the subtitles will be a bit distracting). Does anyone know if they offer cheap on the day tickets?
Preferred Cinemas: Gate, Coronet, Odeon Kensington, Whiteleys, Vue Westfield, Shepherds Bush, The Lexi or any West End Cinema

Well, I "enjoyed" Uncle Vanya :D

I thought the cast were good but Ken Stott was outstanding as as Uncle Vanya. The play has challenging themes: loneliness, disappointment, longing and wasted lives. Watching the characters complaining and feeling sorry for themselves was rather irritating at first but hey, if I was stuck in a country estate miles from anywhere flogging my guts out for years for a man who turns out to be puffed up nonentity, I'd be entitled to a moan... and
and a spectacular meltdown in the second half
The play ain't a comedy and it ain't a tragedy either....it's sad and it's funny...bit like life really.
