Re: Life of Pi
I saw this film last night (Tuesday 11th December) at a 80% full Xscape in Milton Keynes.
Enjoyed the film, and thought it was one of the best 3D films I had ever seen.
Would thoroughly recommend the film.

Re: Life of Pi
This was mind-blowingly awesome, I cannot believe how true to the book it was (even the "slow start" was the same as the book, which was hard to get into at first but then very rewarding)! The trailer made it seem much more magical than the adventure/drama the book is but in fact the trailer just used the few fantastical scenes in there, overall it focused on the interesting survival story. Having said that, the settings were of course very magical. From colourful Indian to an ocean with glow in the dark fish and an island filled with meerkats. I particularly loved the scenes where the ocean was entirely still and the sky was reflected in it. There were also some beautiful floating scenes and transitions from present day Pi telling the story to Pi in the past.
The 3D was good too, it gave the film extra depth and the more magical scenes seemed even more beautiful and fantastical and there were definitely a few points where the 3D really made something jump out of the scene
(like Richard Parker's first scene on the small boat, I totally jumped back at that!)
I forgot about the "alternate ending" in the book, which was also used in the film. I am glad they didn't actually show it but just have Pi tell the story, and I am choosing to believe the original story is the truth
10/10 Very true to the book and stunning to boot.
Forgot to say, judging from the trailers before there are some fab Dreamworks movies coming out in 2013. Personally cannot wait for Epic (looks beautiful) and The Croods (looks very funny)!

Re: Life of Pi
Since I have not read the book, I made a deliberate choice not to watch the trailer so that I could go into the experience with no expectations. I pat myself on the back for that one.
Visually stunning movie telling a beautiful story. Loved the tiger and even enjoyed 3D (which I am not a big fan of). Thought provoking, although did not change my view on religion, emotionally charged, it made me sad at times but left me peaceful in the end.
So why didn't I come out of the cinema completely blown away? I think I may have the co-watchers to blame for spoiling it for me. Watched it at Vue Islington yesterday, and felt like an alien among noisy soda poppers, crisp openers, loud chewers who laughed at the strangest moments. Where I was saddened into silence, they were chuckling, where I had tears in my eyes, they were loudly arguing plausibility of this or that. Made me wish I was sharing audience with tigers ...

I have not read all the reviews, but did anyone notice that when the boat pulled away from the Island, that the Island took on the form of a Woman laying down ??

Yes, it did. Now that you reminded me of it, I'm going to be thinking about all the metaphors again. Afternoon gone, haha.

Re: Life of Pi
I saw this at the Haymarket cinema in London last night.
I was disappointed to find that the screen was teeny tiny so you didn't get the full force of the 3D effect. It was a good film but I think I would have appreciated the beauty of fluorescent fish/sea scenes and cinematography more on a bigger screen which is needed for this type of film.
I brought the book from a charity shop and purposely didn't read it before seeing this as traditionally the films are no where near as good as the books. But have read some comments that the film stayed true to the book so looking forward to reading it now. If anyone's interested in reading the book please support your local charity shop by b*ying it from them. There is always a copy on the shop when I visit and is usually £1 or £2.

Re: Life of Pi
Saw this on tuesday, but not really my sort of film, needed to think about it too much. Very good 3 d effects which in itself made it worth going to see.
After all the hype a bit disappointed with this.
so only 6/10 from me
