I thought it was great, everything I though Lawless would be and wasn't. Obviously similar to The Untouchables and not too distant a second place behind it, which is high praise indeed.
Everyone was on great form especially Sean Penn who was a brilliant, menacing villain.

Re: Gangster Squad
Got there at 6.15pm and did not find seats together on the balcony! But there were plenty of single seats, no doubt left by inconsiderate cinema goers who like to have empty seats between them and the next couple. No matter, parked OH at the other end of the room where he happily sat on his own, and found myself - of course - next to some annoying people who couldn't stop laughing throughout the film.
There were quite a few amusing moments, some of them not sure whether intentional or not, but it wasn't THAT funny. There were some moments of slapstick like the botched-up jailbreak ("Well, that didn't work") but the rest felt full of pathos, with the pregnant wife the only voice of reason. Oh and then there was the violence. This seriously wasn't an 18? Amazing. I had to look away constantly.
So this was the second film with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone together and also the second where Josh Brolin has a beef with Sean Penn - what an odd acting CV that makes.
The scenery was quite glamorous and the story entertaining if unsubstantial. So basically what EthanRunt said. The two guys in front of me had stocked up with 2 beers each and some nachos plus a huge popcorn between them. Didn't even know Cineworld O2 sells beer but I have never seen so much going to the loo as tonight.
Oh, and we did have security stationed at every door (there are two into the balcony area) who told everyone to switch their mobiles off and stood guard throughout. Quite impressive, never had that before at a Sky preview.
7.5/10

Re: Gangster Squad
I was looking for the word but ethanrunt found it first - pulp. Cartoony almost with elements of the graphic novel nature of sin city. And why was Sean Penn made up like a reject from Bugsy? But even so, I enjoyed it.

Re: Gangster Squad
Is this supposed to be a really big release? I haven't really heard much about it outside of this site. I'm surprised by the security! Mind you, we had to check phones for Taken 2 and that was a truly dire film...
