London's Chinese New Year celebrations are the largest outside Asia. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people descend on the West End to wish each other "Kung Hei Fat Choi" (or Happy New Year).

Chinese New Year 2013, the Year of the Snake, falls on 10 February.

Chinese New Year in London

The Chinese New Year festivities begin in the morning with a parade through the West End to Trafalgar Square, where there's an opening celebration with stage performances and special guests.

A second stage on Shaftesbury Avenue hosts performances from local community groups and schools. Over the years the stage has seen fashion shows, plays and even Chinese hip-hop artists.

Chinatown is at the centre of the New Year party. Food and craft stalls line the streets and a lion dance snakes through the crowds, stopping at restaurants to wish the owners good luck for the coming year.

Chinese New Year Schedule

10am: The parade will begin in Trafalgar Square and the colourful floats and beating of drums can be followed through Chinatown ending in Rupert Street at 11am

12pm: On the main stage in Trafalgar Square, the Deputy Mayor for Education and Culture, Munira Mirza, His Excellence Liu Xiao Ming and Stanley Tse, President of Chinatown, will commence the Dotting of the Eye ceremony, which will bring the dragons and lions to life

1pm-5.30pm: Live entertainment on stage including performances by Hong Kong-born singer-songwriter Emmy The Great, the world-renowned Chen Brothers Flying Lion Dance, Paul Potts and performers from Guangdong and Sichuan Provinces

5.55pm: A stunning fireworks display will mark the end of the day's celebrations

About Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is a huge festival among Chinese communities in London and across the world.

Based on the lunar and solar calendars, the actual date of Chinese New Year varies, but always falls between late January and mid February.

Each year in the Chinese calendar is represented by one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac.

Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, falls between 2 February and 9 March, depending on the date for Easter. In 2013, Pancake Day falls on Tuesday 12 February.

Pancake Day is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – is traditionally a time of fasting.

Pancake Day became a great way to use the foods that were given up for Lent – milk, butter, and eggs. Pancakes have featured in recipe books as far back as 1439!

Pancake Races in London

As well as eating pancakes, there's a long tradition of pancake races in London. Participants have to toss pancakes in a frying pan while completing the course. The races often raise money for charity.

If you don't fancy racing yourself, you can always cheer on the runners.

London's biggest Pancake Day race is Better Bankside's Annual Charity Pancake Day Race at Borough Market. Up to 25 teams compete to raise money for Paintings in Hospitals. For spectators and participants, Borough Market trader Baxter's and The Refectory at the Cathedral will be selling pancakes with a variety of toppings, while other traders will be selling a host of sweet treats.

The Great Spitalfields Pancake Race 2013 (Old Truman Brewery, 81 Brick Lane E1 6QL) sees costume-clad teams running while flipping pancakes to raise money for London's Air Ambulance. Races start at 12.30pm. Spectators can enjoy pancakes by Casaba's Hungarian Creperie and music by the Lost Marbles String Band.

Pancake Day Restaurants

Don't miss out this Pancake Day! Head to one of London's brilliant pancake restaurants or creperies for a Pancake Day feast. See our list of London pancake restaurants.

Coastival Scarborough is back this year with a festival on Saturday 16th February. Family friendly fun with an arty flavour with lost of events free to enter.

"Coastival – A Different View is a celebration of the local arts focused on the theme of 'light'. Across Scarborough, venues and local galleries will burst into life with all sorts of events, activities, films, installations and exhibitions, with a fine layer of music too.

Local artists have b*ght into the Different View idea enthusiastically and creatively and we know you will love the result. From the traditional public and private galleries to local cafes and churches, there is something exciting to see in all corners of the town.

We've packed so much into Saturday 16th February that we could do with 28 hours in the day! But even when the amplifiers are unplugged at the end of the evening gig at the Spa, the fun won’t finish. For the rest of February many of our participating venues will keep Coastival: A Different View bubbling along, so please take the time to visit as many of them as you can."
