Free day in 4,500 hidden historic sites
This is a one-off opportunity to grab. From Thu 12 - Sun 15 Sep ONLY, you can get free access to many usually-closed sites in England and other tourist attractions that usually charge. Here are some top picks:

Five places for free that usually charge
•Petworth House, West Sussex (usually £12 entry)
•Beatrix Potter's cottage in the Lake District (usually £8.50 entry)
•Calke Abbey, Derbyshire (usually £6.77 entry)
•Bodiam Castle, East Sussex (usually £6.70 entry)
•Manchester Jewish Museum (usually £3.95)


Five places normally closed that are open
•Nenthead Mines, Cumbria – Mine how you go (sorry) at England’s highest and largest lead mining complex, parts of which are 350 years old.
•Ossett Old Police Cells – This old police station is now a youth club, but you can still see old pictures and artefacts from days past.
•Bristol South Slipper Baths - You can't take a dip, but you can take a look at this 1930s public bathing facility that closed in the 1960s.
•Joyce’s Clocks building, Shropshire - An opportunity to poke around the 1904 premises and to see a display of photographs relating to Joyce's clocks and examples of clock mechanisms.
•Eagle House school tour, Berkshire - A free tour covering the history of the main house, the Boston air crash in 1944 and even a cuppa and a biscuit.

B&Q free kids' DIY classes
Check out the classes online, then book by phoneAt 59 storesB&Q Kids Can Do It classes help children aged 7-11 learn basic DIY skills through small projects such as building bird feeders and making picture frames. They usually cost £5 a session, but members of the free B&Q Club get them free.

Become a member: Simply register online and you'll be sent a confirmation email with your membership code in. If you're already a member, you don't have to re-register.

Book your class: To see the available classes, go via this Kids Can Do It link, enter your postcode and click 'book' on the store and month you'd like. It'll then show you all the slots available and what your little 'uns will be building.

It says the classes cost £5, but telephone 0845 600 5428 and quote the store, class and your B&Q membership number and it's free.

The classes take place at 59 B&Q stores and there's no limit to the number you can book. Places are currently available until November, but B&Q says the offer will be extended.
