Re: Gravity
6/10. First 10 minutes ruined by lack of 3d and the remainder by a lack of story and prior over hype. IMAX might have helped the aesthetics as we were in a tiny and packed screening room but I was frustrated most with the plot. I think I preferred Elysium to this which came as a huge surprise.

Re: Gravity
Saw this in Southampton last night. I'm not usually impressed by 3D films but saw this in IMAX in the middle back seat and was absolutely blown away by the effect. So much so I was wobbly when I stood up at the end like I'd been on a rollercoaster. Sandra Bullock fantastic as always, George Clooney cute. Storyline a bit lacking - would be hard pushed to explain it to someone in more than a few sentences but the effects, views of space and earth and the space shrapnel flying right at you 'faster than a speeding bullet' more than made up for it.

Visually stunning experience with some incredible direction, let down by some contrivances in the script and moments that i just kept rolling my eyes at (
Like George Clooney Halucination AND George Clooney letting go of Bullok, some "emotional" scenes that felt cliched and/or undeserved. The fire that happened to start as soon as she arrived at the International Space Station
), but held together by fantastic atmosphere and acting by Bullok, along with some spectacular 3d (i love the 3d medium, so glad it was used effectively here)
Although i do admit there was 15 minutes in the middle where i was desperately trying to hold in a gigantic burp that was building up in my stomach out of respect of my fellow cinema goers, and it got incredibly painful. But it subsided
7.5/10 from me
I saw this again last night and noticed that
Bullock started the fire when she knocked a spanner (or similar) we saw huge sparks float around as it bounced off the metal surround.
Re: Gravity
How does a fire burn in zero gravity?
Well, on Earth hot gasses rise while cool gasses fall. Clearly that doesn't happen in zero-g. Only turbulence by someone moving past a proto-flame can add fresh oxygen to help the burning. The problem with that is the turbulence doesn't last long so all flames in zero-g suffocate themselves. As the flame source is very hot and there is no movement of air to carry away the heat, so more turbulence will produce more burning until the turbulence dies out. At which point the flame suffocates itself again.
Clearly zero-g fires are slow affairs.

Re: Gravity
LOL. I agree it's just a film but I also think it ought to stick within the realms of possibility and physics. Not everyone will understand these things (I certainly don't) but some people will and can find it very grating when the laws of physics are broken willy-nilly. I think every film unless total science-fiction ought to try and keep things believable (which could be sticking to the correct costumes and behaviour in a costume drama just as much as in space). Just like authors research their topics to keep them as accurate as possible, I don't see why screen writers should not do the same.

There were some flammable materials around but not enough to make it into such a large conflagration as far as I could see.
