This was much better than I was expecting it to be, I thought Colin Firth was excellent as was Jeremy Irvine who managed to capture many of Firth's subtle mannerisms.
Overall a very decent slow burning drama that deserves an 8/10 from me

I'd also give this an 8/10.
For such a slow-paced film the (almost) 2 hours slipped by. Very moving and uplifting.
My only criticism? I knew nothing about Eric Lomax beforehand and I'm still in the dark after watching this.

I have been to see 'The Railwayman' this morning in Enfield. I thought it was very well written filmed. I love Colin Firth, ever since I saw him in 'Pride & Prejudice'. His acting was brilliant. A very emotional ending especially given the photos of the real Lomax and forgotten the Japanese guys name. I was wiping some tears from eyes. A true story performed brilliantly. Well done.

Kingston's screening was a mess. They didn't open the doors until 10:15, then we were sent to Screen 8. Lights went on and off after ten minutes, then at 10:30 we were told of a "technical problem" and we had to move. So we had to rush to Screen 3, and...the film had already started! Then they stopped it and finally we managed to get on with it. Well, at least the heat was on!

Edinburgh Westerhailes was full and surprisingly well behaved. Only saw one person go out to the toilet which shows in my opinion how good the film was as no one wanted to miss any of it.
Colin Firth was excellent in it. 9/10
Good to see so many fmukers. Marjoreemarjora, Chelle1973 and Nosila50.

Tiz you will have to introduce yourself as you seem to be at the same screenings as us. We don't bit so let us know next time and we can arrange an introduction.

Much better than I expected. Riveting drama and a gripping true life war story. Highly recommended.

Brilliantly acted and such a moving film. The silence leaving the screening said it all, it felt so wrong going to the Christmas markets after as it felt so sombre. 9/10

Just been reading about Eric Lomax ... wow, what a life and not even a nod to 90% of it in this film.
He was born 'n' bred in Edinburgh but had an 'english' accent in the film. His wife Patti was Canadian and also had an 'english' accent. It appeared to be made or funded largely by Australians so why the avoidance of realistic accents? Don't understand

And let's not mention the film poster which has a panoramic shot of Edinburgh in the background. Couldn't see a single scene that was filmed in the city.
Despite this, my initial 8/10 my rating has risen slightly, on reflection, to 8.5/10 It's definitely up there in my favourites of 2013.

Really really good film! Very impressed! Glad I seen it!
Highly recommended but for adults only.
It was a right decision not to take any kids today, and note for parents here
it is not a 12a as it says on the tickets ( it's a mistake!, so under 15s may not be admitted, we had this situation once before with sky tkts) the rating is 15 and it is a very good adult movie!
