Great film! Could never do the man justice but has a damn good try!

I saw this yesterday at the National Media Museum in Bradford. I thought it was a wonderful film. I did not feel it was too long, and thought the contrast between Nelson and Winnie's treatment and how this changed them was fascinating.

Loved it. Will probably go to see it again.

This is one of those films one feels churlish to criticize; dare one say anything churlish about an icon? It was very good, not too long, not too sycophantic.
The central performances were excellent. I was however unsure about the tone of the flashbacks to the old village; rose-tinted idyll? The transformation of Winnie was well done. But I felt that the 'darker' aspects of Mandela were not touched - links to 'terrorist' acts, links with Soviet communism, Cuba and the Libya of Gaddafi. Mandela was a very complex character, and he himself was aware of this complexity. I suppose no film could give every side and this was a good attempt at the impossible.

Finally got to see this last night at shepherds bush

I did really enjoy this. And think it is a great tribute to an amazing man

But I did find the film dragged a little. Found myself clock watching

Saw this last night ..sff freebie...a bit watered down on some facts and over done on others but still a good watch and the time flew. Winnie is inspirational too, it's easy to forget what a hero she is also. RIP Mandela.

Saw this for a 2nd time last night, having seen it the first time before he died.
I thought it would be good to see it again having seen all the coverage of his life in newspapers and tv . . . and I'm glad I did.
It was worthy of a 2nd viewing (for free, of course!). I did pick up little things about Mandela which I didn't pick up on the first time with some fleeting references to his womanising, etc.
Still worth marks 8.5/10.

I'm probably the last person here to see this (so slow that it was 3 pages back in Film Discussion), but I had turned down free previews in order to wait to see it with OH (more his thing than mine) when it reached our local civic centre, only to have to go alone after all, as OH is still feeling unwell. Still, it was better than I expected and didn't drag for me at all, despite being so long. And the weather was absolutely foul outside, so spending the afternoon indoors at the cinema was ideal. 7.5 from me.

Not seen this yet but looking forward to it moreso having read the reviews on here.

I'd be interested to see how it compares to Goodby Bafana (which I thought was very good) starring Dennis Haysbert as the lead - the film is more focused on the relationship between Mandela and his Guard.

Can't find a thread on Goodbye Bafana despite searching. When I read about this film I put it in my Never Miss on Sky and it tells me its on tonight on Film 4 at 12.45am so I have put it in record as work tomorrow. I thought others who had watched the Mandela film might also be interested in this one.
