Re: Inside Llewyn Davis
Odd elliptical film from the Coen Bros; natch! On the plus side we have direction, soundtrack and performances [with the sweetest cat since Puss in Boots]. Photography is great and the Goodman cameo is brilliant. But...does it add up to anything or is it 'froth'? Is there depth, with Llewyn's Odyssey [and the aptly named cat] and the decision to bypass Akron, where 'Penelope' may be waiting, warding off suitors? And haven't we had Homer before, in 'Brother, where art thou'? There's a hint of 'Sliding Doors' in the narrative arc, a Finnegan's Wake start is also the beginning. There's a namecheck of 'meaningful' 1963 Disney film, though we're in 1961. And a more famous Greenwich Village singer appears briefly in an embarrassingly twee moment. The lead character is odious, but strangely likeable; the music is haunting, but memorable; there are longeurs, but the film zips along; all in all, a forgetable film that I know I won't forget. Odd elliptical film from the Coen Bros; natch!

Re: Inside Llewyn Davis
Really enjoyed this, it was funny, melancholic, visually beautiful and full of great performances, particularly from Oscar Isaac. 8/10

We all thought this was great. In spite of not being a particularly likeable figure, you still had to root for Llewyn. And the cat was far too gorgeous.
Thanks to pxc for saving us seats as we got stuck in the back of the queue in spite of being one of the first to arrive. They held this upstairs at Holloway Road but not in the big cinema but a small dinky one. It did mean that we got to climb the beautiful staircase (the only nice thing in Horrorway Odeon) and pxc looked like a star when she got to the top and waved to us below.

I too love the cat - Didn't he look like "A street cat named Bob"?ejwrank wrote:We all thought this was great. In spite of not being a particularly likeable figure, you still had to root for Llewyn. And the cat was far too gorgeous.

Re: Inside Llewyn Davis
Saw this at the weekend and despite being a fan of the Coen brothers I found watching this to be a slightly disappointing experience.
I think having such a dislikeable central character was the biggest hurdle I couldn't get over but not enjoying any of the songs (excluding 'Please Mr. Kennedy'
) probably didn't help either.
Although it was by no means a terrible film it really didn't live up to the hype so 7/10 feels like a fair & appropriate score...

Re: Inside Llewyn Davis
I really enjoyed it. A good Coen Bros film with a patchwork of interesting characters and events that don't necessarily tie in together. Felt like a very realistic story rather than a predictable movie format.

Re: Inside Llewyn Davis
Well what can I say?
The Coen Brothers to the rescue again though NOT immediately after and on the same day
(The day before FREE! “Only Lovers Left Alive”......) ****
I may have missed something re the ending so do need to (AND WILL) see it again but I enjoyed the Coen "ride"
Fargo remains for me the most profound and mesmerizing of the all their film releases, but from Blood Simple to now Coen films I relate to them all
****I went to see Dances with Wolves and I only left after seeing Miller’s Crossing (the soundtrack I also own)
So ended up seeing ONE brilliant film that day.
