I've only ever tried the carrot cake, it was a large slice, but too sweet for me, but I'm not the worlds biggest fan of cake/chocs or anything sweet that isn't Haribo or peardrop.

Plus I would prefer to oven cook them rather than deep fry them from a health point of view. I know I'm asking a lot of questions but I'm thinking that they would make a substantial meal if I packed them full of vegetables. Thanks for any ideas.
I've only ever used spring roll wrappers, similarly, I've never oven baked them.

Edit: just realised that was from May 2013!
No problem at all I'm still looking for cooking ideas. Just b*ght these today http://www.google.co.uk/aclk?sa=l&ai=Cu ... id%3D37726 absolutely brilliant b*y on offer for £35 at Barton Grange garden centre. Looking forward to trying them out so any new recipes will be welcome so that I can try them out, they are not just sharp at the edges like some knives so easier to sharpen. My old knives work purely through brute force nowadays as they are past their best

The carrot cake is delicious and moist, the Bakewell and Victoria sandwich are also yummy especially when they are freshly made plus I must say that the fruit flans is to die for. It is any type of cake, scone including the gluten free range.

Mmm, Portuguese (I think) orange custard cake from a cafe near a theatre I visit in Earl's Court. I sometimes suspect my theatre bookings are influenced by the local cake-sampling opportunities, but this is delicious and unlike anything I've ever tasted before. Amazed it survived the trip to the theatre and then 3 trains home, but maybe it's more substantial than it looks!

Though all I have to say this time is that JL's carrot cake is revolting and nothing like the real thing; not only far too sweet and covered in gunk, but also with a peculiar, pervasive and none-too-pleasant flavour I can't identify. I don't much like carrot cake anyway as it's so boring and ubiquitous (the modern equivalent of Victoria Sponge, perhaps?), but it was the best of a very poor and limited choice so of course I'm nobly forcing it down. Might have to chance a cheese scone in March, though!
I've applied for a card now so I can join in on the monthly cake fun and I appreciate the carrot cake warning. I normally love it so would've probably gone for that one straight away... Which JL cakes do you recommend?
Had the carrot cake yesterday and although ok, not as good as the chocolate and berry roulade which gets my vote. I had it twice already, thought I should try something different this time, going back to the roulade next month

I'm never risking the JL carrot cake again: not only a poor example of the type but I felt decidedly queasy before I'd finished it, as it was so sickly-sweet. I am keen to track down the elusive and enticing-looking salted caramel cake, which I saw in the Kingston branch but which had sold out when I went back to bag some. Staff told me theirs is the only branch in the country to stock it - why? It might be disgusting for all I know, but I shan't rest until I've secured a sample for the purposes of research.

Happy to know you are taking this research role seriously, Ms T. I also thought JL carrot cake was too sweet but cannot condemn it to quite the extent you have. JL Oxford Street never seem to have chocolate cake which is a great pity.

Chocolate cake! Now there's a thought, ejwrank. Still a bit boring, but it'd make a change from the other boring JL cakes. Perhaps I should contact their Customer Services to make the suggestion?

Yes definitely think you should mention that it has been established that the JL Carrot Cake is not up to JL standard and they must do something about it. As for chocolate cake we think it is never boring. Sometimes it is too good to be true. Son makes a very delicious chocolate ganache which puts my chocolate birthday cakes to shame.

Ooh, not only a cake-making son but one whose creations cannot possibly be matched by the common or garden commercial variety!

Perhaps you could take in a small sample, or a photo for demonstration purposes on your next visit, ejwrank, to show JL just how far short they are falling in this area?
