Oh! Oh! Forgot to mention the corrugated iron sheets that the army used as shields towards Noah and his Shed. Didn't think they had that in biblical times (let alone the welding helmets or knitted jerseys already mentioned)! Poor, poor, poor.

Personally I liked it. I didn't love it but then I really didn't hate it. The essence of the story of Noah is there but there is also artistic licence where some things didn't happen the same it is told in the Bible. But the fact that it is 139 minutes long and really not much happens really during that time, yet at no time did I felt time dragged.

It is interesting what other people will think of this as after the film I spoke to some friends. A christian who wanted more of the Christian message across and so thought it wasn't enough. Then another non Christian friend who thought it had too much of the Christian message. 7/10

Anyway, just got back from the Times+ screening. Thought the film was brilliant - ambitious, sincere and with a straightforwardly unironic environmental message. I think the people moaning about the welding masks and corrugated iron must have missed the parts about the enormous industrial cities and mining machines at the beginning of the movie.

Anyway, I also got to chat to Darren Aronofsky who's one of my fave directors, so I'm happy as a clam.

I didn't like it, I didn't hate it - I am quite indifferent to the film. There were some montages that felt like an assault on my eyeballs with the rapid changing shots and it could have used a trimming of the running time but it was not the disaster it could have been. Some of the CGI did look shoddy and the costumes/set design looked too modern at times (it looked like Noah was wearing jeans). 5/10.

Q&A with Darren Aronofsky was worth hanging around for.

Was lucky enough to get a Times+ ticket last minute yesterday and glad I did.

There may be a good reason Aronofsky doesn't make blockbusters, as people have stated, CGI wasn't great and costume design was questionable. But I can live with all of that as we got too see a great director's vision/interpretation of a delicate subject.

The Q+A afterwards was an excellent experience, especially with Patti Smith rocking up! Aronofsky is a ballsy director, we know that already but he can also tell an excellent story. My personal highlight was the Evolution sequence running alongside the story of Creation, brilliantly done and explained afterwards in the Q+A. As Aronofsky explains, religion and the story of Noah itself doesn't belong to one religion or even the three major ones, it means different things to different people and this is his interpretation of what he would call beautiful 'poetry'. He certainly knows his stuff about Genesis and the Bible in general which came across in his answers.

So overall, the film is good, not a classic but I will certainly remember the Q+A for a long time to come and it was a great opportunity to meet one of my favourite directors.

I must be hard to impress but I thought the Q & A was anything but enlightening. I found Aronofsky aloof and luvvy (maybe it was the scarf!) and I wondered quite why Patti Smith was invited on stage as she contributed little to the conversation (and of course the cinema had cut out the final song to get on with the Q & A so we all had no idea how 'brilliant' it was except for Aronofsky tell us it was so brilliant). I thought the film was a dreadful mishmash -- a mess. When Russell Crowe asked Emma Watson if he should sing her a lullaby I found myself whispering aloud -- "No, spare us please."

But it was very nice to have the company of funthing and jeanelle and many thanks to Sunny Saver for making the evening possible.
