Yeah, at first I was uncomfortable with this and it felt a little dull to boot. Script is minimal, acting is basic, characters act stupidly and are moral-free. Props/effects are non existent for a movie billed as scifi. I didnt count even one car stripped down Mad max style, it just looked nothing more than the a very backwater area of Australia. The economic downturn it uses as a backdrop to the story (America has gone into recession, so everyones moved to Australia...?!) seems highly unlikely and rather redundant to the plot.

But the film grew on me, by dint of its string score, tremendous atmosphere, and the ugly-beautiful Aussie-set cinematography. It becomes clearer that conversations between characters sound deliberately disjointed to represent not just their inadequate social skills from years spent in isolation, but also the breakdown of humanity at large in their world. In contrast to the yarnish beginning the bitter finale is as riveting as the grinding sheet metal sounds pervading the score at the end.

I think its being marketed wrong though, there's very little scifi element at all. Its really a modern frontier Western, and a slowburner at that. In fact the sci-fi backdrop can easily be completely ignored. Theres another movie it reminds me of profoundly, but I cant recall the title right now. Its close to The Proposition in style (the Aussie Western, not the Sandra Bullock movie lol).

ah yeah the characters remind me not of those from another movie, but a novel, The Dark Tower by Stephen King, in particular the twisted, immoral inhabitants of Tull in Book 1.

[RAZORBACK]

Really enjoyed David Michôd's 'Animal Kingdom' so had pretty high expectations going into this.

Thankfully it didn't disappoint, although it was relatively low on action & dialogue it had atmosphere in spades and although I saw the guessed the 'reveal' just before it happened it was still a pretty satisfying conclusion to an enthralling journey.

Overall it's a very decent post apocalyptic drama and more than deserves an 8/10 from me...

Caught this with my very cheap Livingsocial tickets at the Dominion.

I also had high hopes but it just was too empty.

It was a good vehicle for Robert Pattinson to prove he can actually act and he was very convincing.

It was no Proposition for me though.

The distorted, dirty score from Anthony Partos perfectly complements the gritty visuals and moral mystery of Pearce's anti-hero. Even with some lulls in the mid-section, The Rover opens and closes so strongly that it is a ride well worth taking.
