The Homesman
Does no one want to talk about this? I saw this at Hackney PH yesterday, which is a good hour away for us on public transport, and compared to Greenwich PH falls down on quality as all the screens are so far down that you have heads in your way wherever you sit. Who thought this was a good design? Also, we had two reserved seats next to us which at the end got taken up by two women, one on crutches, the other just fat. God, she was annoying, grunting and making all kinds of noises, including inappropriate laughter when it wasn't funny.
The film was ok but having read the book last week I was forever comparing. They kept to the book quite faitfully apart from there being 4 women in the book not just 3, Bob Giffen was called Andy (a strange change), and the icestorm was left out. Also, the book gives the women's stories much more time and properly explains what a claim snatcher is.
It's still quite a strange story.

Re: The Homesman
I saw this today, I thought that it was going well until about two thirds of the way through, the story took an unexpected turn. I could see no reason for it happening and it took the shine off what had went before.

Guess somebody better stick up for Hackney P'house. We think it's fine. We don't sit way in the back (two back rows in Cinema 2 that are separated a bit so quite high up) and think the seats are fine with plenty of legroom. The screen is big which is great and not too low for us. We had no heads in front of us as there was a good amount of tiering. So I'd suggest that you move down a bit, Beate and hope you'll find it better viewing.
We all liked the film. I thought there were a few slow bits and things that didn't quite fit (the hotel in the middle of nowhere) but overall we were glad we went and we only wish there were no adverts/promotions but that seems to be the way at the Picturehouse -- or are there some that just get on with the film?

Re: The Homesman
They are inconsistent. Some times you get 20 minutes of ads and trailers, sometimes you get a few trailers and their ident film. Other times you sit there for 20 minutes of blank screen and film starts at 11.20am whilst occasionally, the film actually starts at 11am. Is it any wonder there are latecomers when it's so confusing as to when the preview will actually start?ejwrank wrote:Guess somebody better stick up for Hackney P'house. We think it's fine. The book explains the hotel in the middle of nowhere and everything else a bit better but I agree that it is still weird.

Re: The Homesman
Have to admit that initially I found this quite uncomfortable to watch therefore it took awhile before I fully engaged with the story.
However, as soon as things went in an unexpected direction I was completely drawn into the events occurring on screen and consequently this ended up being a rather satisfying viewing experience.
Overall I thought this was a very decent drama that did just enough to get an 8/10 from me...

Re: The Homesman
A journey and a half to get to Hackney PH as there were no overground working on our part of the line, but worth it.
This is so good, but also so heartbreaking and sad. All the characters are well portrayed even the non speaking parts. Really gritty, realistic and powerful. 9/10
So shame there were 25 minutes of adverts, and because of the long length, and no overground, OH had to leave only half way through to make his journey back to Central London for an appointment on time. The only time he agreed to come to a Sunday screening as he so wanted to see this film, and there was no direct transport.
I was happy with the seating too. Very comfy and roomy and had no heads in the way, as the incline is very good where I was sitting.

Re: The Homesman
Dreary, disappointing and thoroughly unsatisfying.
I found the way it chopped and changed at the beginning really disconcerting then it seemed to pick up a little whilst remaining strange, then took its sudden turn before becoming just weird. No idea why Myrtle Streep even bothered with this. It must half take her all of an afternoon to do her contribution.
What a pointless ending too. I really wish I'd stayed in and watched telly tonight instead.

Re: The Homesman
Mixing mental illness and wild west melancholia, a slow movie that draws you in with a sharp, spooky twist. What follows is predictably some form of redemption of course, but also, rarely covered in westerns, what follows on from redemption.
Also terse study of what men in the Wild West were really like, and what women were seen as.
