Re: Whiplash
Really enjoyed this tonight in Bournemouth. Heat magazine treated us to a larger than usual screening room so nobody was slumming it in the portacabins we usually get. Gosh, Juno's dad sure was mean! Great acting, great music and a welcome start to quality films in 2015. 9/10

I wanted to dislike it so I could say "Not my tempo".
But I loved it! Solid cinema!

Re: Whiplash
It's been a while since a film far exceeded my expectations but this definitively delivered above the hype. I was riveted from start to finish. Absolutely compelling filmmaking with two incredible performances. I think I may have liked this even better than Birdman and is my top pick of 2015 so far. 9/10.

Saw this tonight at Odeon Tottenham Court Road.
Loved the music of the film and very intense performance from Simmons as a very unpleasant human being indeed a golden globe well earned.

Re: Whiplash
Thoroughly enjoyed the music. Quite disturbing how someone with power can manipulate others and break them. We discussed our past teachers after the film, how that many of them would have been done for assault now!
Simmons' justification of his behaviour left me somewhat cold 8/10

Re: Whiplash
An intense and disturbing power play performance. I loved the music and the strong ending. I now have a new respect for drummers!

Re: Whiplash
This is a remarkable study in obsession and the pursuit of perfection. Simmons is stunning. His performance is so beautifully ambiguous you can’t be sure, until his final petty action suggests a sadistic motivation, whether he really believes his extremist approach is correct.

Re: Whiplash
Saw this last night in Wimbledon. When it first started I thought it was going to be about auditioning for the Birdman soundtrack! The protagonist, Andrew (played by Miles Teller) was an underdog who you knew would win through in the end because of and in spite of his teacher, Fletcher (played by Golden-Globe winning J K Simmons). Fletcher, who would have been more at home in an army boot camp, followed the methodology of “you have to be cruel to be kind”. He demanded perfection of his bandmembers and woe betide anyone who couldn’t provide it. I am neither a fan of jazz or drumming, however I found the film strangely compelling. A good film, if slightly uncomfortable viewing. It was nice to see some minor stars of US TV there (Paul Reiser from Mad About You and Melissa Benoist from Glee). 7/10
