Excellent drama and great performance from Steve Carell. I enjoyed it but don't know how well it will do given the little known subject matter.

I had pretty high hopes for this so it's disappointing to report that it didn't really come close to living up to them.

It did have moments that were pretty special but they were too few & far between and it wasn't anywhere near as shocking a tale as I thought it would be (I also wasn't expecting Steve Carell's character to be as weak & pathetic as he was).

That said, this film did more than enough to sustain my interest throughout and performances across the board were very decent.

However as I left the screening with the feeling that I'd just watched something good rather than great 7/10 feels like a fair & appropriate score...

I thought this was very good. A real slow-burner of a film with a trio of excellent performances from Channing Tatum, Steve Carell and Mark Ruffalo.
An unsettling, often awkward atmosphere throughout means you know it can't end well (whether you know the true story it's based on or not), a sense heightened by Carell's bizarre, creepy turn as the wealthy, pathetic but petulant and unpredictable John E Du Pont.
It's stately, unhurried pace means it won't be for everyone but it's a fascinating story, impressively told by Bennett Miller. A bleak, disturbing modern Greek tragedy in tight wrestling outfits.

Well, I have a soft spot for Channing Tatum, so I expected to enjoy this. (It is no Magin Mike performance though.) I can happily watch Mark Ruffalo too - a Although I was trying to 'place the face' for a while. (The adult babygrows that they wore as wrestlers that was not something I expected MR to wear.)

But it really was a fascinating tale, and while it was slow at the start, it was clear that this was building the story. Nice to see Vanessa Redgrave getting in on this too. I failed to recognise Sienna Miller for the second time in a couple of weeks.

I thought the DuPont character was built very well, although I'm not a Steve Carell fan. I cannot understand why I had not heard this story before - surely it would have been covered in the UK media, given the family name and power?

8/10 for me.

Good, but not great is how I feel as well. Great performances and I didn't mind the slow pace but I think it could have been 20 minutes shorter.

I doubt it's gonna set the box office alight, I went to a Friday night showing and I was the only person in there. Very spooky... or it would have been if I hadn't been able to hear Paddington in the next room 8/10

That made me laugh to think of being able to hear Paddington whilst watching this film. What a contrast.

Just totting up my films and see that my review has "disappeared". So here it is again, the gist of what I said

Well, we went to see this after the aborted Sun+ screening of Son of Gun at O2 Greenwich. I had no idea what the film was about, but OH wanted to see this, as it had been nominated for many awards, and it was either that or Taken 3.

I was not looking forward to it once I found out it was about wrestlers. However, you do not have to like wrestling or know much about wrestling to enjoy this film, as it is an intense drama about three characters with wrestling as the backdrop. The three performances were excellent, Steve Carrell as the weird, rich psycho, Channing Tatum with his up and down mental state as the talented young wrestler, and Mark Ruffalo, the smart family man who mediates between the two of them. Lots of unspoken scenes builds up the tension.

An entertaining drama, made the more tragic as it is based on events that did happen. 8/10

I thought this film was good if a little slow. CT was great as the male lead as was MR. Steve Carrell was also good as the 'villain' of the film - nice to see him doing other types of role. 7.5/10.
