Steve Jobs

Set backstage at three iconic product launches and ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac, Steve Jobs takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint a portrait of the man at its epicenter.

I was lucky enough to see this at a packed Manchester Printworks last night (and unlucky enough to sit 4 or 5 seats away from some idiot who chatted all the way through, but let's not dwell on that) Firstly, many thanks to elski for posting the comp which I won to get my tickets.

The film is compelling and very much a companion piece to The Social Network, Aaron Sorkin was actually asked on the red carpet if this was part 2 in a tech genius trilogy, and it certainly has a lot of similarities. Both main characters don't think like everyone else and can come across as rude or assholes depending on your point of view, the dialogue obviously is snappy and full of witty one liners and there's also similarities with how Sorkin identifies the motivation that drives the character from their past.

The structure is very interesting, but can feel quite contrived at times, though the script does acknowledge this. That said some of the conversations, especially with Jeff Daniels do feel a little fake, even if you accept it's all a dramatic conceit.

The performances are all excellent and it does have a different feel from The Social Network because of the structure and Danny Boyle's direction. It's always interesting, but some of the attempts to inject some drama, conversations about hard drives and countdowns to PowerPoint presentations (probably not actually PowerPoint thinking about it) didn't really get the heart racing, but as a character study it was excellent 8/10

Ps. We watched the Minions again in the morning, so when the Universal logo came on screen at the start we were probably the only 2 people laughing and singing along :D

A review from a US academic site reviewing the film, with comparisons with Citizen Kane.

BTW - never thought I'd say this, but I think Seth Rogen could be brilliant casting....

Edinburgh was packed tonight, not an empty seat in the house.
I don't know what I was expecting, but probably not this. That's not a criticism, just a personal observation.
It took me a while to get Fassbender and believe him in the role. Kate Winslet had a wandering accent that was much clearer in the 2nd half of the film.
The film grew on me and 1/2 hour in I did find my self engrossed and believing in the charachters.
I know others will think this was marvellous but it was ok for me and a bit but that's it. So 6.5/10

“God sent his only son on a suicide mission, but we still like him because he made trees"

In recent years cinemas have been full of overlong films that could have benefited from having 30 mins cut out, less rare are long films that you wished were even longer.
Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs is such a film.

Told in the backstage area before three product launches over the space of 14 years from '84 to '98, it's a ridiculously entertaining and enthralling look at the Apple CEO.

It's the work of a director firing on all cylinders. Though still reining in, for the most part, some of his usual extravagant directorial choices and trusting in what makes the film great. Aaron Sorkin's script. Issues of veracity aside, it's an extraordinary piece of work. Few people can tell the story of an arsehole and how he became an incredibly rich arsehole and still keep you invested in how it plays out. With The Social Network and now this, Sorkin has done it twice. Using the smart product launch framing device and a series of electrifying two-hander conversations between Jobs and the key people in his life to deliver something eminently quotable, original, funny and satisfying. It takes what could be a dry and potentially alienating subject matter to all but the geekiest of computer nerds and makes it sing.

Helping it do just that is an incredible cast. Michael Fassbender may not look much like the man himself, but is so good that it's easy to overlook that for the duration. Which is just as well as he's in every scene. Equally impressive are the supporting cast pitched against him. Kate Winslet, Jeff Daniels, Seth Rogen, Michael Stuhlbarg, Katherine Waterston, Sarah Snook and John Ortiz are all excellent. One heated exchange between Fassbender and Rogen's Steve Wozniak had me almost holding my breath it was so tense.

My only criticism? The 2hrs fly by far too quickly. I would have been more than happy to sit through another hour and a couple more product launches.

Essential viewing (if I hadn't made that obvious already).

Just read this online in an interview with John Sculley, where he comments on the Steve Jobs film:

Sculley: Jeff Daniels is a great actor. Aaron Sorkin is probably the best in the world at writing snappy, smart dialogue. And Danny Boyle is an Academy Award-winning director, who won an Academy Award for “Slumdog Millionaire.” You don’t get better talent than that. The movie is incredibly entertaining. Jeff Daniels did a great job of showing the relationship and, in many places, tension between Steve and me at important moments.

“When I went to school, all of the metrics of performance were around, what did you remember?… Today, the answers come for free. Go on Wikipedia. Go on Google. It’s the questions where you learn the most.”

But keep in mind, this is not a biopic. This is not the history of Apple. This is not the ultimate story of Steve Jobs. The young Steve Jobs, the one I knew probably almost better than anybody else on the planet, was learning and developing and making mistakes like we all do. But he ended up being the most successful CEO in the world. But we aren’t born that way, day one. So this is an important aspect of Steve developing as a person. But keep in mind that the Steve Jobs who ultimately was known by the world, with all of his success, was happily married. He had three more children. He was a very good person.

To draw the conclusion that this is the complete story of Steve Jobs would be wrong. This is entertainment done at its best. It’ll probably win a lot of awards. But the reality is that this is not everything that made up Steve Jobs. By the way, a lot of the dialogue was written with incredible creative license. Because not all of it exactly happened that way."

Saw this tonight at the Telegraph screening in Manchester. Thoroughly enjoyed it, great performances from the cast and I thought the script was very witty. Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet will no doubt be picking up Oscar nominations for their performances, but I also really liked Jeff Daniels' performance so hope he is also recognized. Also thought the score was very nice. Will definitely be watching this again.

Saw this last night at Odeon Greenwich.

Fascinating drama and insight into Steve Jobs. What a control freak. Michael Fassbender is excellent and so is Kate Winslet, who was unrecognisable at first. Some tender scenes with his daughter. Brilliant script. Really enjoyed this. 10/10
