Don't know if it works (may be related to HP models only?), just tried it, didn't have any errors, but will have to wait until it happens again (or not) to find out. Hope it helps.
Thanks for the link, I do have an HP but it didn't help sadly. So the hunt goes on
It could be simply a driver issue. The link above refers to the monitor driver. I would suggest making certain that nothing in device manager has a cross next to it and particularly check and update the graphics drivers. Win 10 is fairly new so drivers are being updated all the time to iron out the bugs.
My own little annoyance is a camera that works in win 8.1 doesn't in win 10.

Thanks steve9872 I wonder if it was the fact that I installed a driver update thing, that started it? vx

I've had a little think about this. It only happens when you exit standby.
SOP is to bring up a lock screen where you enter your password.
This may allow us to fix your problem by disabling the lock screen, and then coming out of standby puts you back on the page you left rather than diverting you.
My instructions a few posts back are what you need. Just option 2 should be all you need.
Only do this if updating the drivers doesn't work.

still struggling with my problem, I tried your instructions steve9872 and that didn't work.
I've now realised that when actually choosing to shut down properly, it won't, I just get the black screen with the power light lit up. I then have to force a shut down.vx

Stupid question but have you visited the HP website and downloaded /installed the latest drivers and possibly seen if a bios update is available?
Most people with win10 will have upgraded to it so the older or generic drivers will need updating. It isn't necessarily automatic, if windows finds installed drivers that don't cause conflicts it won't complain about them and find an alternative better driver. You have to do it.
Windows update isn't smart enough to do this for you especially when its generic drivers installed. It will look for and install later versions of drivers it finds but it doesn't look for other authors of the drivers. If its generic drivers installed they stay like that until you install manufacturers drivers.

I am having problems getting online with laptop, third time in around a month, it says no connection available, even when I connect via Ethernet cable, clearly not router or broadband as using on my tablet to write this. Tried troubleshooting it says 'a network cable is not properly pluggr?ed in or may be broken' not sure what that means and how to fix, have restarted laptop numerous times and the same problem, reset router even though I know that's not the ptoblem
any suggestions on what else I can try. Using windows 10, Acer aspire e15 laptop.
Thanks

Typical as soon as I post this and then decide to try one more time to shutdown and restart my computer and from it coming back on it seemed different, ie took longer to come back on and seemed to be doing something and now it fine again
Typical my son walked in the door as I was doing this and I asked him for help and it was fine
Clearly this seems an ongoing problem as I have fixed nothing so I would still welcome any suggestions for what else I can try if this happens again. It was working fine all day and for the past few weeks, I only restarted it as my Rapport programme stopped working, yet again, another ongoing problem and I only notice when my online banking alerts me and I restarted in the hope that would restart my Rapport and instead it caused a bigger problem
Panic over for now, hopefully it wont happen again

I've noticed that win10 likes sabotaging functionality to prompt you to restart. It can get really annoying.

I upgraded to Windows 10 and then downgraded as some things were so difficult compared to windows 8.1 eg I couldn't insert SD card in laptop and download photos. I take lots of photos and this became s pain so managed to cancel Windows10. I will only change when given no choice.
Preferred cinemas: Best: Glasgow Quay, Glasgow Braehead, Glasgow Renfield Street, Glasgow Fort & Paisley
Others I'd go to: Glasgow Showcase Baillieston
Films already booked for:
Hope to get tickets for: Every film if they come to my preferred cinemas
