The Nice Guys

#1 Post by prettyxcool » Thu May 19, 2016 9:40 am

Thanks to valda went to the Empire Magazine screening of The Nice Guys last night at Gate Picturehouse.

Very, very funny and entertaining, has a really good plot, great characters, fantastic script, a sort of comedy mystery. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling are just brilliant doing comedy.

The Q&A afterwards with the writer and Director, Shane Black and the producer, Joel Silver, was also hilarious. Very interesting how Shane Black writes a scene. Brilliant evening.

Looking forward to seeing this again.

Thanks to a friend I was able to go to the premiere. Ryan Gosling was looking super duper fly in his green suit I have to say!

Unfortunately I didn't think much of the film, I think that was mainly due to the fact that I really don't enjoy Russell Crow anymore. In this film he had a dodgy accent and was supposed to be some 'heavy' going around beating people up. Let's face it Russell isn't the fittest person in the world and his fight scenes were a bit slow and looked staged. Throughout the film a few bits made me chuckle but I definitely wasn't laughing all the way through and that includes Goslings character.

Well, I really enjoyed it. It still made me laugh. Just as good on second viewing.

The UK premiere was at Leicester Square Odeon. Got quite close and personal with RG on the red carpet! He was even better in the flesh!

No red carpet live screening on the big screen instead we were treated to the organ playing music to some stills of old films and photos of the cinema in the old days.

Intro was done with Russell Crowe as the compere introducing the producer, director/writer and his co-stars, the very talented Angourie Rice, now still only 15 years old, and of course, the gorgeous Ryan Gosling, who got the most screams, as Russell Crowe predicted!

I was underwhelmed by this. Aside from chuckling occasionally I didn't find it particularly funny and I don't know what the audience found so hilarious. It was overly loud and overly violent as well as being about 20 minutes too long. I can't deny that the film had a very strong 70s film though with the outfits, hairstyles, decor etc but I thought the Crowe/Gosling double act felt a bit forced.

Highly unlikely to watch this again. 6/10.

Shane Black keeps his solid directorial efforts going, following Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man 3, with The Nice Guys.
An indecently enjoyable and frequently hilarious film with a fantastic soundtrack, it finds Black on firm if familiar ground.
Basically it's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in 70s clothing, a mismatched buddy comedy in an LA detective noir setting, but is no less enjoyable for that.
Much of the pleasure of course comes from Black's knack for writing quotable dialogue, but Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe's double act is where the real fun lies. Gosling in particular relishing the chance to be the incompetent and clumsy stooge to Crowe's violent (mostly) straight man.
Gosling doesn't do comedy enough but he should as there's a natural clown hiding behind the annoying good looks. Aussie actress Angourie Rice is also excellent as Gosling's daughter, Matt Bomer is an effectively unpleasant killer, while Kim Basinger, along with Crowe, ensures that thoughts of LA Confidential are never too far away.
Admittedly the central mystery involving porn stars and the automotive industry never quite resolves satisfactorily, but it is just a convenient hook to hang the enjoyable Gosling/Crowe double act on.
The ending points to a potential sequel, which on the evidence of this will be very welcome indeed.

I thought this was pretty terrible and don't really remember laughing at all or hearing much in the cinema, apart from maybe the Ryan Gosling break in scene near the beginning - that was very funny and did make me laugh out loud. Otherwise it felt like stuff had been cut out despite the long, long running time and I found the kid annoying and it was increasingly odd how she basically just became one of the team towards the end and joined them on their mission.

Plus did I see a really terribly inserted archive performance from a 70s band (Earth, Wind and Fire maybe) at the party scene or did I dream that

The plot did its job, but noir films and buddy films really stand or fall on the central relationship and the writing/directing wasn't up to it and there wasn't enough chemistry between the leads. It's a shame because I loved Shane Black's Iron Man 3 and anyone with a hand in Lethal Weapon is still in credit for me, but for this 3/10

I so wanted this to be good..... unfortunately it didn't live up to the media hype. Have to agree with Yogi in that it did feel that scenes felt 'clipped' or incomplete in some way. Maybe it had been hacked in the editing??

We saw this film last night and were also disappointed. There are gaping holes in the plot and I agree that it looked like scenes had been cut to get the running time below two hours .

Cinema less than 40% full despite being supposedly fully booked and a few left during the screening.

4/10.
