Re: Nerve
Catfish directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman return to the darker side of the internet with flashy teen thriller Nerve.
Unadventurous high school senior Vee is goaded into taking part in an online game called Nerve in which 'Players' carry out increasingly risky dares chosen for them by the 'Watchers' in exchange for ever larger sums of money. Teamed up with fellow player Ian they become a big hit with the Watchers until things take a darker turn.
A film of two halves, Nerve starts out like a romantic comedy with a modern twist until a shift into darker and ever more implausible techno thriller territory. Thankfully charming leads Emma Roberts and Dave Franco ensure that it remains watchable throughout and the film has a vibrant energy that keeps things moving forward. Whilst New York at night is effectively captured by cinematographer Michael Simmonds.
Orange is the New Black fans should also get a kick out of the appearance of Samira 'Poussey' Wiley and Kimiko 'Soso' Glenn in the same film (though sadly never in the same scene).
As a comment on the dangers of the internet, Nerve rarely says anything particularly profound beyond 'The internet can make people do the dumbest things for fame and fortune', but it's a well paced and rarely dull thriller that coasts along on the strength of its likeable leads.

Saw this today at Cineworld as not screening at Odeon . . . I hadn't seen your review, sb, before seeing it but totally agree!!! I really enjoyed it although it did set me thinking about how far people will go for money and/or fame.stuartboy wrote:Fan-bloody-tastic!

Re: Nerve
I found some of the dares we saw were pretty nerve-wracking to watch but the ones involving particularly worrying.
Well worth watching and the two leads had a great chemistry.

Re: Nerve
Saw this on Friday in Leicester sq, London.
Looks great and some great bookha shots but am a bit disappointed on how tame the ending is.
To me, it felt like a mean girls/hunger game/highlander/Internet mashup...

Re: Nerve
Have to agree with the ending. Tied things up a bit too neatly. A couple of large plot holes as well. Having said that, I still really enjoyed it

Re: Nerve
Wasn't going to bother with this, but it got great reviews on the Front Row podcast.
Really glad we went - it's (mostly) excellent. Only let down - like so many of the last few years' releases - by the final reel, where yet again everything that made the first part of the film so good is thrown away in favour of a "big finish".

Re: Nerve
I agree with everyone else here.
It looked fantastic, well shot, and I loved all the little tags of the watchers popping up all over the place. Good soundtrack too,
The two leads were a good looking well matched couple and were believable in their roles.
A shame about the ending though.

Re: Nerve
This movie was amazing!! I loved the neon in the movie and how it was literally everywhere! Loved Emma Roberts and Dave Franco on screen together. Like what Valda said the ending was disapointing though sadly. Overall i give it a 3.5/5 :)
