Arrival
What an absolutely terrific film. A totally different take on the alien invasion idea which showed relevance to many issues in the real world of today.

Re: Arrival
I thought it was ok, but maybe the film wasn't screened properly in Fulham? It was all very dark and the screen had the bits at the top and bottom where the film didn't expand. NO idea if this was meant to be, but it really annoys me
Was the film really dark at your screening Sparrow?

Re: Arrival
At the Picturehouse Central this afternoon for a second viewing of Denis Villeneuve's excellent alien visitation movie Arrival.
Beginning like several alien invasion movies before it, with multiple spaceships arriving and hovering over sites across the world but foregoing the usual subsequent destruction of major landmarks for a quieter and more contemplative tone as Amy Adams' linguist Louise and Jeremy Renner's theoretical physicist Ian attempt to communicate with one of the ships inhabitants and discover why they are there. As Louise's memories of her dying daughter intensify as she starts to decipher the alien's messages.
After the loud and dumb Independence Day sequel it's a relief to find an intelligently scripted piece of ideas-driven sci-fi that is as interested in stimulating the mind as it is in feeding its audience an endless diet of empty but technologically impressive visuals.
Which is not to say that Arrival doesn't have those too and combined with Bradford Young's often eerie cinematography, the film is striking to look at throughout.
Another great score from Sicario's Johann Johannsson complements not only the visuals but the exceptional sound design too, with it often quite difficult to know where one stops and another begins. While excellent use of Max Richter's On the Nature of Daylight is made in the opening and closing scenes.
Amy Adams is fantastic in the lead role, navigating some tricky emotional waters, a fact that is even more impressive on a second viewing after the film's mysteries have been revealed. Jeremy Renner brings some welcome moments of humour and Forest Whitaker and Michael Stuhlbarg also impress in supporting roles.
A visually impressive and surprisingly moving film, it bodes well for both Villeneuve's involvement in the upcoming Blade Runner sequel and Bradford Young's in the young Han Solo film, two sci-fi projects that could easily fall into the file marked 'Why do these exist?' (Other than to make lots of money of course).

Re: Arrival
Donnie Darko Encounters of an Interstellar Kind
So many good things about this film. It's has an intelligence, rather than just crash bang. In feel and style, although totally different as a movie, it is often quite reminiscent of Sicario.
Although notionally a science fiction epic, it is as much about the inner infinities of love and memory. Amy Adams is perfectly cast for the lead.
The soundtrack is fantatstic.
Definitely want to see again, if we can.

Re: Arrival
I got to see this last night and now really liked it. The only thing i wasn't super keen on was the ending but it was very thought provoking and a nice take on the Alien visitor genre.
Does anyone know what the time scale of the film was? They mention on the news at one point that its been a couple of months. Im just curious how long it took for the escalation to occur?

Re: Arrival
I saw this a few days ago and must admit I was a little disappointed. I'd seen the trailers and thought it looked really good but definitely thought it needed a better ending. I was fascinated by how the linguists use different factors to find language links. Maybe I should go and see it again . . .

Re: Arrival
I was really enjoying this until the ending, not sure we're talking about the same thing but the method used to solved the problem didn't make sense.
