The Edge of Seventeen

#1 Post by The Sparrow » Wed Nov 23, 2016 1:27 am

I went in knowing nothing about this film although when I heard someone describe it as a chick flick, my heart sank.

But this is not what I would describe as a typical chick flick especially when it featured some darker subjects. Woody Harrelson was terrific with some of the best lines and he and Hailee had a terrific relationship.

Hayden Szeto is not somebody I have come across before but even though his character could have been cliched, he rose above that.

A coming of age film this might be but it's also a damn good film and well worth a watch.

To be honest I had no idea what this film was going to be like but it was surprisingly entertaining and uplifting. I went to see at Islington Vue and looked around at the beginning and saw lots of young people and thought maybe the film would not be enjoyable but I feel this film will appeal across the board. The relationships between the two female friends is well portrayed and there is lots of humour especially with the teacher Woody Harrelson. Kiera Sedgwick is also good as the erratic mother. Altogether a very good film with universal appeal. 8/10

I wasn't sure what to expect with this film either, but must say I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed it. I would agree with previous posters comments above, some good performances by all the main characters, the cinema and I all laughed at Woody's funny comments and I loved the Erwin character - 8/10 for me.

Well we both really enjoyed this and it far exceeded my expectations as I was anticipating a rather run of the mill coming of age cutesy film but it was so much better than that with top notch performances and script.

Saw this yesterday in an impeccably clean Kingston Odeon (my last tweet about the cinema being consistently dirty obviously has had some effect!). I was expecting this to be a run-of-the-mill, coming-of-age teen flick, but, I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised. We follow the story of 17-year old Nadine’s best friend falling for her brother, her own crush, her insecurities and unlikely friendships. For me, the real star of the film was the perfectly cast Woody Harrelson, as the sarcastic, unsympathetic, misanthropic teacher. I also thought Hayden Szeto was excellent as Erwin, Nadine’s tongue-tied fellow student. The script was very well-written and there were quite a few laugh-out-loud moments – even for me, and I don’t normally find teen movies remotely funny. I was really glad to have seen it and this is one of the main reasons I like SFF so much – as you are encouraged to see films that you think are outside your comfort zone. 7/10

We loved it! Woody was great (as usual!). Good to see Hailee growing up nicely!

Very much enjoyed this. Had no idea what it was before going in, so was pleasantly surprised. Quite gritty, and doesn't shy away from a few realities of teen angst.

Very disappointed that Greenwich Odeon was around 75% empty, despite tickets for this being snatched up (as well as a separate competition for it being run by SFF).

(Please cancel your unwanted tickets people) :)

Loved it! Didn't know a lot about the movie, so I was pleasantly surprised. It's about the usual teen clichés, but the way the topics are approached is really funny and light hearted, although there's also room for some personal growth when it comes to the main character. Totally recommend!

Just got back from a preview screening hosted by the blogging twin sisters Lucy and Lydia - they are so lovely and sweet - at the eOne offices.

Loved it! I laughed, I cried. So funny, so emotional.

The story is so fresh, heartwarming and hilarious. Mainly due to the main lead Hailee Steinfeld - she's Nadine, you see everything through her eyes, her expressions, her angst. She is brilliant and so is Woody Harrelson as her teacher. He has the best lines, and is hilarious! Then Erwin, who sits next to her in class, hoping to hook up, he is so cute, so lovable and so quirky.

I think this has got to be best teen film, but do not expect a typical teen film, you will be surprised. I was surprised!

One I could see again and again, as there must be so many lines and scenes that I missed from laughing or crying.

10/10
