Moana

#1 Post by prettyxcool » Sun Nov 20, 2016 10:42 pm

Full of action and humour, brilliant soundtrack and just absolutely stunning and beautiful animation. The characters are delightful and a really lovely story. Loved it, that I saw it twice this weekend!

Lucky enough to get a ticket for a special 3D screening at the Courthouse Hotel, and also won tickets for a preview screening at BFI Southbank with a Q&A with the producer, the directors and Auli'i Cravalho, the teen who plays Moana. It was her birthday in two days time, so we all sang her happy birthday during the Q&A. Sweet 16! Awww!

She was all of 14 when she sang and played Moana next to Dwayne the Rock Johnson's Maui.

So worth seeing in 3D though. The colours were amazing and really came to life, which I thought the 2D lacked.

Excellent. 10/10

I was at the Den of Geek preview too, but I didn't like the 3D at all as I thought it made the colours too dark. It didn't matter much in the green island / blue water scenes but a lot of the fight scenes came over too dark for me.

Yes, the animation was stunning, the characters mostly loveable and the story passed the Bechdel test, but there was a lot that fell flat for me. For a start, I didn't find the songs particularly memorable. I'm not the world's greatest Frozen fan, but gosh, their songs rock. And it has the world's most loveable snowman in it. Here, we get a small pig and a stupid chicken, that serves no purpose whatsoever. Is it really funny to see a chicken bump into things? Disney however did make fun of themselves a couple of times, by letting Maui say "You've got an animal sidekick - you're a princess" and "Please don't start singing or I will be sick".

Demi-God Maui was fun because he was arrogant and full of himself (literally, with his mini-me tattoo), but deep down he was a kind person. He got all the best lines. Moana was great in her naive feistiness but I just found the story a bit slight. Sorry.

My favourite Disney remains Tangled.

7/10

No need to say "sorry"! ;)

We all like different things, that is what makes the world go round!

I agree the lyrics from Frozen are more memorable, but I enjoyed the music, nevertheless, it was very uplifting, and I found myself tapping away... :shifty:

We loved the film! Especially since there was a female heroine and the absence of thevtypica love story!

So captivated by Moana, I forgot to mention the short film, Inner Workings shown before Moana. Loved this too! Very funny animation. Pulled in all directions, which will win, your heart or your head??

Moral: Don't let your brain rule your heart! :D :D :D
