Moonlight
One of the best films I saw at the London Film Festival and a deserved winner of Best Film (drama) at the Golden Globes this morning.
It's the second feature from director Barry Jenkins and is based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney, it tells the story of Chiron, son of a drug addicted mother who is struggling with his sexuality in the Liberty City area of Miami.
Told in three chapters with a different actor playing Chiron in each, this is a beautifully shot film with excellent performances from ex-athlete Trevante Rhodes as the oldest incarnation of Chiron, AHS 6's Andre Holland as Kevin, a former childhood friend he'd had a sexual encounter with, Naomie Harris as Chiron's troubled mother Paula, Mahershala Ali as the atypically kind and supportive local drug dealer Jean and, in an impressive screen debut, Janelle Monae as Jean's girlfriend.
Profoundly moving, it's a film of many transcendent moments, not least a late diner scene between Rhodes and Holland which sees the pair reunited after years apart, as Chiron's carefully built tough persona cracks to finally reveal his true, long denied self.
Essential and vital viewing, Moonlight is a lyrical, compassionate and moving look at sexual awakening and black masculinity.

Re: Moonlight
This film totally surprised me! I thought is was going to be a stereotypical film but it's actually not like that at all and so much richer than expected. Moonlight is an extremely unique coming of age film about a boy who is struggling to understand himself, the world and the people that connect around him. Brilliant acting from a very strong cast throughout and also executive produced by Brad Pitt. I was totally absorbed by this film from start to finish, beautifully shot with a great sound track. It was so well made, it's one of my favourite films from last year. Definitely recommend.

Re: Moonlight
I pa*d for a cinema ticket!
And it was worth it , good movie. The first act was a little slow, and very fly on the wall but don't let that put you off, good things come to those who wait and the earlier events are underlined later on in the movie. I think the idea behind the first act being a bit fuzzy and dreamy becomes clear later, in that they are supposed to be memories of the adult Chiron.
Clever how it goes from fly on wall to standard movie as the film progresses. Had some walkouts from the KKK brigade or homophobes, couldn't tell which they were. Also saw most of Blood Wars as a bonus next door straight after. Now that wasn't a good movie lol.
some of it is very uncomfortable viewing, be warned (that's Moonlight not Underworld blood wars lol all of that's uncomfortable!)

Re: Moonlight
Listen up folks. I was out a few hours and come home to a barrage of chat posts on Free Films. That is shameful. You all should know better. The invitation only code should not have been posted in the first place but that does not excuse anyone pointing this out underneath. That's what the film discussion threads are for. Or you contact the original poster or a mod to get a post either deleted or modified. This isn't me being dictatorial, this is me trying to preserve our notification allocation. You all want to be notified when a new code comes out, right? Well, with each chat post you diminish that allocation, until there is nothing left. So please, read the rules and act accordingly:

This was a total borefest. I was actually starting to drift off to sleep. I gave it an hour and then left so I could wake up.

Re: Moonlight
I thought it was a very moving film. Haven't seen a film like it before. The actors all did a great job, especially the six different actors who played Chiron and Kevin. Naomie Harris was excellent as Chiron's mother, this is a very difference performance for her, and it's nice to see her getting a chance to show off her acting muscles, after having minimal to do in the Bond films.
I also loved the score by Nicholas Britell, especially the main theme which reoccurs throughout the film, and how it changed slightly each time to reflect the new stage of Chiron's life. Beautiful cinematography, this is a film which is lovely to look at, and I loved the camera work. I can see that it's going to split opinions because it is a very slow film, with lots of silences and quiet moments, but overall I thought it was very good.
