Has any body else seen this new indie / monster movie?

The trailer & adverts don't do it justice, its a very "unique" watch but the underlying themes are certainly not assisted by script or premise.

At the cinema tonight for Nacho Vigalondo's engagingly bizarre genre mash-up Colossal.

Playing like a cross between a typical US small town-set indie drama and a gigantic monster B-movie, Colossal is an original and intriguing film that follows Gloria, an unemployed, hard partying woman who gets kicked out of her boyfriend's New York City apartment and finds herself moving back to her small home town.
At the same time a huge monster appears on the streets of Seoul causing chaos and behaving bizarrely.
It soon becomes apparent that there may be a connection between Gloria and the monster.

And that's just the start of an odd and refreshingly unusual film that goes into darker places than the goofy sounding premise suggests, with the initial novelty turning to more weighty subject matter like addiction and abusive relationships as the film progresses.

Key to keeping the film emotionally grounded as events get weirder are two fantastic performances from Anne Hathaway as Gloria and Jason Sudeikis as her former childhood friend Oscar. Sudeikis in particular gives a darker and more interesting performance than usual. Though Dan Stevens is slightly wasted as Gloria's boyfriend and a fine Tim Blake Nelson also sadly disappears halfway through.

The film is slightly over-long at 110 minutes and starts to drag a little towards the end, while a fairly low budget means the special effects are functional rather than outstanding but going into a Summer of overblown CGI blockbusters, Colossal is a unique breath of fresh air.

I saw this yesterday not knowing anything about it and have to say I found it rather enjoyable. It is certainly quirky and the there is no big budget cgi monsters but, as kevinknapman says "Colossal is a unique breath of fresh air"

I had only seen the trailer for this and managed to avoid/not see any spoilers.....And im so happy! I really enjoyed this! There is so much more to the movie than the trailer lets on. I loved the dark twists that came as the story progressed.

bullied to such an extent that you're prepared to have a stand up fight with a guy. It could have been a very effective allegory for domestic abuse where going home to a support system gave her the power to fight back against Dan Stevens. And the geography would have made sense but it's actually a weird mess of character motivations and murder. Unless I blocked something out in a drunken haze.
