The Big Sick
Re: The Big Sick
Less impressed with Cameo to arrive in good time only to be told it was full and had been overallocated. I did however persist (hoping for an alternative as I could see managerlady hovering in background. I was then offered to hang on in case of no shows. So out of 40 seats they'd overallocated their paltry SSF allocation and then been turning SSF (and thus Guardian readers) away saying it was full when it wasn't! Not impressive.
That said, the ice teams helped.
Film was not unpleasant. Perhaps a little overlong and not very original (although it seems it was semi autobiographical). There was one stand out joke but the rest were as funny as the pretty mediocre stand up routines.
An ok 5/10. Could do better.

Re: The Big Sick
Hate this small screen 2 at the Cameo as it feels as if you were sitting in someone's living room with a massive TV.
Enjoyed the film although a tad long. He would never make a living as a comedian.
Why on earth didn't the staff give us the free ice cream lolly when we went in and not as we came out into the pouring rain!
Nice to catch up with alythonian and her other half.

Don't know why she told you it was full as there were still a few empty seats over the other side of the room beside us which were never filled.stuartboy wrote:Less impressed with Cameo to arrive in good time only to be told it was full and had been overallocated. Re: The Big Sick
But they were for special people - members. Fair enough if members had indeed booked them and were perhaps just late. Main gripe was why on earth use the cupboard room? At least I missed nothing. Also noted she let in a member who hadn't booked, after me, yet had turned away so many SFF peeps.biggins wrote:Don't know why she told you it was full as there were still a few empty seats over the other side of the room beside us which were never filled.stuartboy wrote:Less impressed with Cameo to arrive in good time only to be told it was full and had been overallocated. Re: The Big Sick
Loved it. Thought it was culturally relevant and I could relate to a lot of it. It was sweet, funny and one of the better Rom coms. 8.5/10

Re: The Big Sick
Saw this yesterday at a full Clapham Picturehouse. A rather slow-moving quirky film about the cultural conflicts of being a Pakistani in the US. Interestingly, the protagonist, Kumail Nanjiani was played by himself. Zoe Kazan played his love interest, Emily. Kumail accepted all along that eventually he would enter into an arranged marriage, with his parents choosing his wife-to-be. That is, until Emily fell seriously ill. While she was in an induced coma, Kumail reassessed his feelings for her and while she was still comatose decided that she was the one. Holly Hunter was fabulous as Emily’s mother and it was lovely watching how she gradually changed her opinion of Kumail. Likewise, Ray Romano (everyone loves Raymond) was wonderful as Emily’s father. An interesting film, a bit of a sleeper, it will never be top of the box office and will probably end up on Netflix or similar 6/10 (p.s. enjoyed the free ice-cream as well!)

Re: The Big Sick
I had relatively high hopes for this given all the hype -- I was disappointed. I was unconvinced by all the characters -- yes I know it's based on a true story-- but I simply couldn't get involved with any of them. Long, boring and not funny.

Re: The Big Sick
Good film. Had some laugh out loud moments and some good performances (I didn't recognise Ray Romano either!). Ended up slightly cliched even though the premise hinted at originality with it being based on a real story. It was unnecessary long in places, and at times it felt like some scenes from a sketch show had been shoe-horned in with no intention of progressing the narrative.
Despite that, a film that genuinely makes you laugh is always worth seeing.

Re: The Big Sick
It's a strange one, the movie makes a self-aware point that it's a normal relationship movie, a norom-com? But only Zoe Swicord Kazan really acts that way consistently and she's missing half the movie!
I know Kumail Nanjiani as a sarcastic comedian so when he's acting cute in the first half it didn't feel right and some of the jokes don't land that effectively. I wasn't sure whether they were playing their ages present day or younger versions which the wardrobe and tech seemed to imply. At times it seemed like a weird version of Big.
The movie feels long because there's an event near the end that would form the climax of a regrom-com but it's just the start of another act here. It could have been really affective because it makes a lot of decisions that do feel real and earned

Spoiler
Show
but ultimately it arrives at exactly the same destination a typregrom-com would, it just had a different driver.
