Ha! My mum wouldn't even see it. She turned it down. She even refused the offer of a double ticket so she could take a friend.
I didn't mind it in the least.
It is one of those I really couldn't watch again anytime in the next decade or so.

I saw this yesterday and can't help but think that the film is marketed as comedy in the trailers but in fact is much more than that. Yes there are comedy scenes and lines but most of them have been shown in the trailer . . . which is why I think people may be disappointed that the film is not wholly comedy.
I rather enjoyed the story even if some or much of it has fantasy and agree with others that Dame Judi Dench plays the part so well and could not imagine anyone else playing the part of the elderly Queen Victoria . . .and Eddie Izzard as her son, Bertie was also very good.
Given I have a Limitless card I will probably see it again but only to see what I think of the film now knowing it is not comedy.

Enjoyable but not brilliant! Beautifully done but slightly on the sweet side! Great acting..... I might watch it again when it comes on television.

I had some vouchers to use up so saw this last Friday.

I feel that this was very much paint by numbers and vastly inferior to Mrs Brown. That had been great due to the wonderful pairing of the irrepressible Billy Connolly with Judi Dench. This time it's just more of the same shtick but it was made to look almost like slapstick, with exaggerated eye rolls and exclamations. There was a bloke in my screening at th other end of the cinema who found everything hilarious.

Someone makes a scandalised face - HA HA HA HA!
"He's my Munshi" - HA HA HA HA!
"This mango is off" - HA HA HA HA!

It was properly offputting, and for the first time I felt for the courtiers confronted by a silly old monarch who thinks she can do what she wants because she's the Queen.

Yes, it's an interesting story but I didn't think the film did it justice, and as for his proclamation that he would never leave her and stay to the end - in actual fact he'd taken a year's absence late into her reign and only returned three months before her death. But that wouldn't have fit the narrative, would it?

6/10

I had been meaning to watch this the minute it came out but i got sidetracked..

So the excitement had died by the time i got around to it.. but it was worth the wait. On the surface about a lonely queen who takes a shine to a native of her empire .. a con man of extra ordinary abilities.. but their friendship grows and the consequences of that... the jealousy, rivalries of the royal house and the power differentials masquerading as racism ( which would be the same no matter who was in charge.)..

subversive and funny in places... touching and tragic at other moments... the end was tearful for me.. thank god it was an odeon free points or premier card//
