Battle of the Sexes

#1 Post by stuartboy » Tue Oct 10, 2017 10:40 pm

OMG! Steve Carrell was SO Austin Powers in this!
Bee-have!
Rather than being a biopic this was simply a portrayal if a sporting event from the seventies and as such was simply redundant and pointless. As an exercise in period drama this was very well done, but that's pretty much it. I'm sure the match was televised and still exists and this would have sufficed at a fraction of the time spent watching this.
That stupid hussy doing the red carpet told us to try to stay until the very end to watch stock footage of the characters. What a bare faced LIE! There was nothing of the sort. So there we all were, just as if thus was a Marvel movie with mid/post credit previews...and we sat like fannies for diddly squat. So for this and this alone I'm giving this pointless movie no marks at all.

I was bored. It was too long made worse by Edith Biwmann shouting at me 1st for 30 minutes.
Film was interesting for about 20 minutes the rest was padding, and pretty pointless boring padding too. I really like tennis, but I didn't like this.
A really good hour long documentary interspersed with the footage would have been about 100 times more effective.
I'll give it 4/10

Bored? I slogged through the most boring Edith Blowman live premiere footage (which apparently wasn't even live!) and then the film started. After 30 minutes of that dirge I struggled to stay awake through the first 20-30 minutes of the film. The snippets I did manage to see weren't worth maintaining conciousness for. Thereafter I managed to at least keep eyes open. Needn't have bothered though.

Strangely it seems I got two separate reminders for this and two separate double tickets. I definitely only booked once. Once too many it seems.

Didn't expect the "live" footage to be so utterly boring about how wonderful all the cast were etc, etc, etc. Thought Edith BOREWOMAN's head would drop off as she was nodding the whole time to everything they said. The film was slow and too drawn out in places.

Being older than most on FMUK, I remember watching Billie Jean King on TV and she always came across as a bitch - a female John McEnroe. My parents and my sister and I used to cheer for the other person when she was playing and were elated when Ann Jones beat her at Wimbledon 1969 for a UK win. I also remembered the outcome of the Battle of the Sexes.

In my opinion Steve Carrell can only play Steve Carrell. 4/10

I liked it for not being simply a portrayal of tennis, there was much more to it.

Didn't really find it compelling though.

Stuartboy, there were a couple of original photos shown just before the main credits. One for example of Riggs' photo shoot where he was on the couch with nothing but a tennis racket.

I did spot those, just not the usual montage of original footage that she made out would be, so we sat through credits for nothing.

I enjoyed the film but felt that examining both the stories of Billy Jean King and Bobby Riggs in parallel meant that neither story got the depth required to take the film to the next level. The tennis match at the end felt a bit anti-climactic as the movie ended pretty much straight after it finished and we saw little of the fall out of the result.

Overall it was generally interesting and was well acted by Emma Stone and Steve Carell. 5/10

It was okay, wouldn't really recommend. I actually thought the live footage was better than the actual film. I wanted Savvy Boyle to show up. 4/10

I got more from a five minute interview with Jelly Bean King on breakfast telly than this whole 2 hour epic. Result: 2 wasted hours.

Another film I was really looking forward to. Really felt like a film of two halves, felt it got a bit lost in the middle. But overall, an interesting story and some exciting scenes re the match itself.

Really good to see that the romantic interest wasn't stepped over in this film, although I wasn't 100% convinced about Marilyn and BJK's chemistry, just seemed a bit off key at times, but perhaps that's how it was at the time. 7/10
