Lady Bird
Lady Bird, the directorial debut of actress Greta Gerwig, is the semi-autobiographical story of a teenager growing up in Sacremento California in 2002.
17 year old Lady Bird (real name Christine) is longing to get away from her home town and her slightly overbearing mother to a New York college, despite her less than impressive academic record. Dismissive of her mother's financial concerns, Lady Bird is more interested in her social standing, the local boys and what her future holds.
Gerwig makes a fine debut with Lady Bird, a film that deals with a well-trodden subject with wit and honesty.
A funny and astute script and a great cast ensure this is an enjoyable watch.
Saoirse Ronan is as impressive as always as the flawed, occasionally infuriating but funny Lady Bird, with both Laurie Metcalf and Tracy Letts on moving form as her parents.
While Ronan has great chemistry with the very funny Beanie Feldstein as her best friend Julie.
Lucas Hedges and Timothee Chalamet are also good value as Lady Bird's love interests.
Familiar territory feels fresh in Gerwig's hands with a film that focuses more on the lead character's relationships with her mother and best friend, rather than the standard romantic entanglements with boys that define most teen coming-of-age films.
Lady Bird, after successful collaborations with Noah Baumbach, marks Gerwig as a promising filmmaker in her own right.

Re: Lady Bird
Was really looking forward to this film and it didn't disappoint. A great directional debut from Greta Gerwig. Nice to see that she wasn't overlooked at the Oscars for this 8/10

Re: Lady Bird
Was not totally completely impressed with this film. Showed how egocentric the world is these days.
Daughter thought mother didn't love her enough and that nothing she did was good enough.
Mother thought that daughter didn't appreciate what she and her husband did for her.
Therefore the clashes between the two were inevitable.

Re: Lady Bird
I saw this today and was suitably entertained. A good balance of humour and serious topics with great acting throughout. . . .the angst of the teenager who struggled with relationships in all areas of her life.

Re: Lady Bird
Not quite the tour de force I was expecting considering the Oscar buzz. In fact, rather predictable. Well acted by all and entertaining but when the credits roll you think, that’s just another quirky coming of age film I can tick off. 7/10

I felt that though this was of interest, it offered no originality. The same tropes were used.. 6/10

Re: Lady Bird
Coming of age drama about the love/hate relationship of a teenager with her mum during her last year at high school. After all the hype, it felt flat to me, and it felt long even though it was only 1.5 hours, and I nearly nodded off towards the end, as I got a bit bored with it, it was not compelling enough to keep my attention. It is a shame as Saoirse Ronan was very good as the teenager and Laurie Metcalf was excellent as her mum. Call Me by Your Name, Timothée Chalamet appears as her love interest, and I thought he was very good too in his supporting role. 6/10
Knew I had seen Laurie Metcalf before, she's Sheldon's mum in the Big Bang

Re: Lady Bird
I went with OH rather reluctantly this afternoon to see this as I've not liked films Greta Gerwig has been in. Farances Ha was a particular low point for me, however this was her directing and I'm glad I went to see it. It was well done although there were some gaps in some of the back story presumably lost to the cutting room floor? Pretty in Pink for a new generation to some extent but I enjoyed it and Sacramento looks nice in it, it is a bit of a homage to the city too.
