A Star is Born

#1 Post by nosila50 » Wed Sep 26, 2018 1:31 pm

Saw this last night in a packed Edinburgh showing. Assume from Age group attending that the majority would have seen the Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson version previously.

Being one of the biggest fans of that version, I did wonder if they would use the same songs and thankfully that is not the case as there is no better than Barbra. I would however say that Lady Ga Ga was more than able to hold her own in this modern day remake. The story is very much as before but with modern day update. Bradley Cooper is ok as the failing rocker but found the Texas drawl a bit OT.

Still the one thing it did do, is make me dig out the soundtrack and DVD of my preferred version and relive that. Funnily enough it was the original tunes I hummed on the way home.

Good update and will go down very well with new viewers to the story. 7/10

A Star Is Bored.
Found this about an hour too long.
Don't recall ever seeing the original so for all I knew this was a biopic of how Barbra Streisand got started and married Kris Kristofferson! Well how was I supposed to know?!
This idea was supported by the constant nose references...
Penny started to drop when I realised it was present day and there were iPhones, internet, and modern cars....couldn't possibly be about Babs! Lol. Then I heard them call her Ally. Deal was sealed.
Although I'd previously seen that it was Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, I couldn't place them during the film at all. Guess that means they did their job.
Pity there's at least 4 or 5 chances to preview this (A Star Is Bridesmaids!) - once will be enough.
Not bad though. Pretty much what was expected.
Oh - Gaga can act. And belt out some songs!

I really enjoyed this version but agree it was a tad too long. I rarely compare newer versions of films to previous ones so not comparing to previous . . .just accept it as a film of today. I thought Lady Gaga was very good as was Bradley Cooper. I loved the music throughout and am looking forward to another viewing!

It seemed to me that over half the movie was lost to the cutting room floor. So much seemed rushed or cut short, including the songs. So many events were blink and you miss them.

very good Auntie!

Little Voice was telling me not to see this tonight, I shouldda listened. The rock music was ok, but Germanottos songs were dull. The film was entirely predictable, zero life at all, I missed the last ten/twenty minutes though due to walkout, the two leads just felt like puke everytime they were on screen.

The original was made in 1937.
Judy Garland's version was made in 1954.
Whilst Streisand's film was released in 1976.

I came to ask a question but can see it would be a waste of time.

I saw this last night at Wimbledon Odeon. I remember the Barbara and Kris version. I enjoyed it very much. Good performance from Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. 8/10.

If you like her singing you're in for a treat; if you're indifferent about it, she does it frequently, and very loudly. It's ok, the reviews seem to be gushing over it, but to me that doesn't seem deserved. There's some pretty on-the-nose dialogue, and although it's effective in places, I was yawning quite a bit. But it seems my middling response is in the minority with the critics.
